This study is aimed at investigating the aesthetic value of "Heung" indwelled in Korean dances.
"Heung", one of most characterized emotions for Koreans, is the feeling of uncontrolled emotional motivating power in exercising. In line with that, Heung is one of the original driving forces found in Koran dances.
Therefore, this study aims to answer the question "what is the heung of Korean dance?" We will study Heung to find it’s aesthetic value by trying to understand it in terms of art, and examining it’s characteristics via it’s relationship with Korean dance. We will analyze Heung’s aestheticl value beyond it’s dictionary definition as mere pleasure and merriment.
Based on the above approach, this study come to the three following conclusions: Initially, Korean dance is defined as aesthetical principles having active relationships with life realities along with the emotional expression. Aesthetic principles include "nature-friendly" based on Korean's attitude of going with the tide and preferring the elements between humans and nature, "improvising internally", the core of instant expression in Korean dances and "mutual dynamic",or dynamic motions melted in silence.
Secondly, the aesthetic characteristic of Heung in Korean dance is that it has a tendency to be extended and overall. It is expressed with the motion of "stillness in moving ", a continuous movement while trying to stop and the motion of "curved folding motion", the attempt to seek the harmony between balance and unbalanced. These factors draw to the aesthetic consciousness in Korean dances as it reflects its internal intention to be harmonized.
Thirdly, Korean dance is characterized in the free consciousness as shown its trial to escape from being taken hold of. This gives unlimited creativeness to Korean dance along with its mental oriented approach as focusing on beyond material things and internal value of each substance. In other words, it restores its meaning and focuses on changing the world simultaneously as well as itself.
To conclude, this study is aimed at exploring the potential of modernizing Korean dance while maintaining Korean traditional factors like "Heung". It is also expected to be used as a reference for further research as it presents a direction for Korean dance through its trial to find real substances which it regards as most important.
