The object of this study is to develop a career education program, as a regular 2-unit course in order to efficiently educate college students' career development, and to verify the effectiveness of the program. Two sequential research problems were raised. First was how the career education program were constructed with respect of contents, activities, and procedures. Second was whether the developed career education program was effective.
The career education program referenced mainly the career program study of Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education & training(2006) and Korea Employment Information Service(2006). It was based on the contents of 8 self-development abilities of the career education model of KRIVET(1998).
The career education program was consisted of four main categories: understanding on oneself, understanding on job fields, career choice and decision, and career plan and strategy for ‘career plan and efficient design for college life'. It was developed as a 15-week regular courese.
To test the effectiveness of the program, 189 students (95 males and 94 females) in 4-year ‘N’ university in Chunan-shi, Choongchungnam-do were sampled to form a experiment group. And 189 students (79 males and 110 females) who took the other courses (human relations, english conversation and educational administration) were sampled to form a control group. Both of the groups were in the second semester of 2008.
The career education program was carried out as four division classes through a class titled 'Design for college life' offered at the college of liberal arts, and the period of this study was performed 2 hours once a week for total 15 weeks from September 2, 2008 to December 9, 2008.
Variables used to test the effectiveness of the career education program were the self identity and the maturity of career behavior, career stresses, the strategy on career stresses, the career exploration behavior, and the level of decision making on career paths.
Data processing in performing this study calculated the average and the standard deviation of difference between the pre-test and the post-test of the groups (the experimental group and the control group) to compare these. Moreover, in order to test the effectiveness of the program, the main effect of the groups (the experimental group and the control group), and the interaction effects between genders, academic years and (experiment/control) groups were tested. Dependent variable was the (post test - pre test) difference score of each variable.
The findings were: All the self identity, the maturity of career behavior, the strategy on career stresses, the career exploration behavior, and the level of decision making on career paths of the experimental group subjected to this career education program were significantly improved as compared with those of the control group not subjected to this career education program. Accordingly, it could be confirmed that the career education program provides good effect on these factors.
Also, it showed that in the self-identity, there was the interaction effect between the academic years and the departments of the groups (the experimental group and the control group). For the lower tolerance of the strategy on career stresses, the social support and problem-solving focused strategy of the experimental group was improved while it showed that in the avoidance-focused strategy, there is the interaction effect among the academic years of the groups. For the career exploration behavior and the self-exploration behavior, the interaction effect were among the academic years of the groups.
On the basis of the findings, following discussion was made.
The career education program was quite effective for the improvement of the self-esteem/identity, the maturity of career behavior, the strategy on career stresses, the career exploration behavior, and the level of decision making on career paths of the college students. In fact, the college period is an important time for preparing social entry, and it is necessary to have reasonable, efficient career educations.
Especially, when considering the real world at which the vulnerability in the labor market and the youth unemployment problem emerge, there was a limit of the group consulting programs for career development, most of which are lasted for few people in a short period of time, to vocationally educate many college students seeking a career developing opportunity. Therefore, it is necessary to newly establish a regular college program in order to efficiently consult career development of college students. It also need to secure the faculty exclusively responsible for the career education and operate systematic programs. Further, even if it is provided as the regular college program, it is necessary to plan and manage a systematic program of career development from a freshman to a senior.
