This study was intended to explore the possibilities of applying the selected Ecological Picture book on the child's - which is commonly available in the children's education institutes concentrated in cities -to the story-telling activities, and examine the educational effect in relation to the change in the life respect behavior, life respect knowledge, and life respect behavior.
Study question were as follows:
1. Do the story-telling activities of Ecological Picture book on the child's affect the life respect attitude?
2. Do the story-telling activities of Ecological Picture book on the child's affect the life respect knowledge?
3. Do the story-telling activities of Ecological Picture book on the child's affect the life respect behavior?
For this study, the program was carried out during the story-telling hour for a total of 12 times from May 2009 to June 2009, twice a week for 30 to 40 minutes each time, at D kindergarten located at Suji-gu, Yongin, for 66 children(control group comprised of 34 children, and experiment group comprised of 32 children) who were aged 5. The epilogue strategy was implemented according to the 4 epilogue patterns of Hynes & Hynes-Berry(1994).
The presentation of the selected picture book was made by modifying the evaluation reference pertaining to the perspective of Jo Hyeong-Sook(2005) and the perspective of Jo Hee-Sook, Ji Eun-Joo, Yu Seung-Hee(2007). The story-telling activities were carried out directly by this researcher for the experiment group according to the design of the story-telling activity program application, while they were directed by the teacher-in-charge for the control group according to the annual education plan of this kindergarten.
For the validation, the questionnaires used in this study were related to the life respect recognition, which were designed by Lee Hee-Ok and Kim Gyeong-Hwa(2007) on the basis of the 'education of children on the life respect'(Gwon Eun-Ju, 2000; Kim Gui-Soon, 2002) which were revised and complemented by Bae Yong-Cheol(2003) according to the item of themes.
To validate the research issues put forth in this study, the life respect recognition was tested before and after the experiment. And t-test and analysis of covariance were carried out to estimate the average and standard deviation of the experiment group and the control group and examine the difference of effect between both groups. For the statistical data treatment and analysis, SPSS 13.0, a statistical program, was used.
The results of this study suggested the followings:
First, the results of the covariance analysis on the difference in the average score of post-experience test between the experiment group and the control group, which considered the pre-experiment test score of ecological book story-telling activity education as the covariance, indicated that there was a statistically significant difference in the life respect attitude and life respect behavior in relation to the subfactors pertaining to the perception toward life respect.
Those results implied that the experiment group which was provided with the education on the ecological picture book story-telling activity had more positive effect on the improvement of the life respect attitude and the life respect behavior than the control group which were given the education on the story-telling activity according to the annual education plan.
Second, the results of the covariance analysis on the difference in the average score of post-experience test between the experiment group and the control group, which took the pre-experiment test score of life respect knowledge as the covariance, showed that there was no statistically significant difference in both groups. That is attributable to the fact that average score of the post-experiment test on the knowledge in the control group also rose slightly compared to the pre-experiment test period although the average score on the knowledge in the experiment group increased, suggesting that the knowledge is influenced more by the external confounding variables such as external information or activities, etc, compared to the attitude or behavior.
This study demonstrated that the ecological picture book story-telling activities through the indirect experience was suitable for the composition and structure of life respect program and also had positive educational effect. In addition, the findings of this study suggest that the epilogue strategy which was carried out for the children who belonged to the experiment group had more educational effect on the story-telling activities, compared to the control group where no epilogue strategy was implemented. Teachers need to make efforts to ensure systematic educational courses in order to promote the life respect education of children, and studies should be carried out on the development of sustainable ecological program and epilogue strategy.
