The study aims to thoroughly observe the process of science gifted students’ career development from elementary to high school years in Korea, and to offer new insights into career guides to help them build a desirable career path. The basic theoretical perspectives underpinning this qualitative research are developmental perspectives and symbolic interactionism.
The participants for the research are 18 science high school students, a representative group for science gifted students in Korea. A total of 18 participants had retrospective, in-depth interviews twice respectively. Each interview took about 45 minutes, and all the conversations over the interviews were recorded. Firstly based on the case by case analysis and then on the cross case analysis, the study drew overall patterns and characteristics of career development.
The research found that the most significant factor affecting gifted students’ career development was their relationship with science, which had been formed by close and continuous interaction between internal and environmental factors, and then developed into more profound relationship over time.
During the elementary school years, they vaguely showed their interest in science, which was largely influenced by internal factors rather than by environmental ones. During the middle school years, they showed their desire to comprehend complex scientific phenomena and get scientific knowledge, and to take a lead in society by means of science. However, they could not have their desire fulfilled with curricula and learning methods of non-specialized high schools. In response, they opted for a specialized high school for science, with high expectation of studying science more thoroughly. Moreover, the fact stimulated their aspiration for social development that the school for science was a center for excellent students.
After getting admitted to science high schools, they encountered deep and diverse educational programs beyond the levels of general high school programs the liberal learning environment unbound to formality and peers with an equally high aptitude and passion for science, all of which had great influence on their career development. Those who had faithfully studied coursework at school since at the middle school rediscovered their intrinsic academic ability and interest and got to understand the fundamentals of science. Meanwhile, those who had already engaged in further study on math and science in preparation for science competitions were satisfied with the liberal and voluntary learning environment of science high school and continued to devote themselves to specialized areas by keeping their preparation for science competitions.
The most crucial factor affecting gifted students’ career choice and prospects for future careers around the time of their graduating from high schools was "experience" that they were impressed by science and added value to science in the course of career development. Students who had established a profound inner relationship with science tended to expect a bright future for their career life in the field of science and technology. This internal experience occurred when students were in the environment where they got quality science education beyond the level of a general curriculum, together with classmates with aptitude and passion for science. Some experienced this from private education in the middle school years, while others from science high schools. Even in the same educational setting, however, those who had felt heavy pressure of cutthroat competition formed a week attachment to science and failed to paint a rosy picture for their future careers.
Consequently, for desirable career development, more focuses should be on their attitude toward science as well as on gifted students’ aptitude for science. That is to say, it is required to observe the process that talented students form internal relationship with science and to provide continuous psychological support for them to build desirable relationship. Furthermore, together with aptitude, ability and social expectation on the jobs, "value-based" career guides should be also considered in the career decision-making process. It is because gifted students put special meaning and value on science, choosing science as their major, and that the same mechanism is more likely to act in the career development for gifted students than for ordinary students. Finally, psychological advice should be offered to help students sensibly overcome any psychological crisis that they may experience in the process of their career development and use the crisis as an opportunity to achieve career maturity.
