The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of discussion activities through fairy tales on young children's safety knowledge and safety problem solving ability. For this purpose two research questions were established as follows.
1. What are the effects of discussion activities using fairy tales on young children's the safety knowledge?
2. What are the effects of discussion activities using fairy tales on young children's safety problem solving ability?
The subjects of this study were 40 five year old children from J and D kindergartens located in Dong Gwang-yang city. There are 20 experiment groups and 20 comparative groups.
To measure children's safety knowledge, Safety Education Program(Pickle,
1989) which was translated, revised, and supplemented by Kwak(2000) was used. To measure children's safety problem solving ability, Preventing Injury : A Safety Curriculum(Scott, 1992) which was translated, revised, and supplemented by Kwak(2000) was used.
The research procedure consisted of pre- test, experimen taltreatments, and post test. The two groups were regarded as homogeneous groups because they did not indicate significant differences in both safety knowledge and safety problem solving ability on the preliminary tests. The experiment was performed twice a week, total 16 times during 8 week period. After listening to fairy tales, the experiment group performed discussion activities and the comparative group performed drawing activities.
The results of pre and post tests for the experiment group and the comparative group were verified by t-test with SPSS 14.0 program to compare and analyze the differences in safety knowledge and safety problem solving ability. The results of this study are as follows.
First, the experiment group that performed discussion activities using fairy tales obtained a statistically higher point in the safety knowledge test than the comparative group that performed drawing activity using fairy tales.
Second, the experiment group obtained a higher point statistically in the safety problem solving ability test than the comparative group. In all of the sub-factors of safety problem solving ability such as playing safely, observing, traffic rule, coping with dangerous situations, cherishing oneself and others and preparing for environmental pollution and disaster. Statistically, the experiment group also obtained statistically higher points all of the sub-elements of the test than the comparative group.
The result of this study imply that activities of discussion using fairy tales is worth utilizing at early childhood education programs as an appropriate and meaningful teaching-learning methods to improve safety knowledge of young children's and their safety problem solving ability.
