The purpose of this study was to verify the mediating effects of shame and maladaptive coping style in the relation between a maladaptive perfectionism and psychological maladjustments using structural equational modeling.
The presumption of this study is that the two mediators, shame and a maladaptive coping style may serve as vulnerable factors, thereby facilitating psychological maladjustment. The study follows through on this assumption in its development of two theoretical models explaining the psychological maladjustment. In the first model(the mediating model of linear arrangement), each supposed vulnerable factor mediators independently between shame and a maladaptive coping style, so that two factors may be viewed as being linearly arranged; in the second model(the mediating model of arrangement in due order), a maladaptive coping style is taken to have mediation effects prior to shame, so that the factors are understood as mediating in due order. Further, the study set out to analyze the different characteristics of the two models above, and to clarify the significance and relative weight of the two mediating effects, aiming to identify the more correct and simpler model, explaining the relation between maladaptive perfectionism and psychological maladjustments.
For this purpose, a sample of 278 college students(male; 99, female; 179) were asked to complete the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, TOSCA, PF-SOC, SCL-90.
In analyzing data, this study employed statistical terms and methods such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, Cronbach's alpha and the Structural Equation Model(SEM), SPSS 15.0 and AMOS 7.0 program. In clarifying the significance of mediating effects, the Sobel test was used.
Data was analyzed using SEM to explore the mediating effects of shame and a maladaptive coping style on the relation between maladaptive perfectionism and psychological maladjustments(depression, anxiety, interpersonal sensitivity, hostility)
Structural equation modeling analyses supported a full mediating effect of maladaptive coping and shame between maladaptive perfectionism and psychological maladjustment. In the first model(the mediating model of linear arrangement), the indirect effects of shame and maladaptive coping style appeared statistically significant, while the direct effects of psychological maladjustments were not captured as statistically significant, rather revealing complete mediating effects. This finding confirms the hypothesis of the study in showing that shame and maladaptive coping style each have independent indirect effects, operating at the same level. Taking into account, in the second model(the mediating model of arrangement in due order), the process which maladaptive perfectionism influenced college student's psychological maladjustments via shame and maladaptive coping style, this mediation effect also showed up as statistically significant. This in turn supports the study's hypothesis that, regarding the impact of maladaptive perfectionism on psychological maladjustments, college student's shame may operate prior to a maladaptive coping style. In the second model, the indirect effects of shame and a maladaptive coping style appeared statistically significant, while the direct effects of psychological maladjustments were not captured as statistically significant, rather revealing complete mediating effects. A comparison of the two competing models found the first mediating model of the second mediating model of arrangement in due order more definitive.
The final model also revealed a significant path from parental effect to maladaptive perfectionism, from maladaptive perfectionism through maladaptive coping styles and shame to psychological maladjustment. Further, for generalization for the final model, Cross-validation was analyzed using other samples(311). Also, the results supported a full mediating effect of maladaptive coping and shame between maladaptive perfectionism and psychological maladjustment. And this study examined the stability of its final structured model, analyzing male and female groups in order to clarify whether the model held for both groups. The result shows that there are no gender differences between the structure of factor between groups.
The significance of that study lies in this claim that shame and maladaptive coping styles, especially if diminished through therapy, may serve to mitigate the direct effects of maladaptive perfectionism.
Finally, the clinical implications and several limitations of the present study, and directions for further study are discussed.
