Teenager's volunteer works based on The reformation plan of Education on 31, May was carried out on 1995 as one of education program in Korea.
Teenager's volunteer works compared to adult's ones are aimed at improving love for mankind by promoting the humanity and community sprite. The sprite of love for mankind is rooted in altruism and philanthropism especially emphasized on the basic of humanitarianism in welfare for the handicapped among the areas of social welfare.
There must be the fact that our society has prejudice and wrong perception toward the disabled people. According to this, my study will show how the volunteer work done by teenagers influences the sense of social distance. Furthermore, I will share some directions in order to develop teenager's volunteer work and increase the social acception on the handicapped people.
This research is done to examine the difference of teenagers' perception toward the handicapped after 256 teens experienced the volunteer work in welfare facilities of the disable.
Firs of all, the teenagers who have experienced in the welfare facility show more positive changes in the social willingness and contact factors toward the disabled people than those who have not done. Yet they who have experience of volunteer work didn't reach out the affect and knowledge factors which explain about feeling of the disabled people.
Secondly, during the volunteer work, teens who directly engaged in the contact activities with the handicapped have more positive change in social willingness and contact factors than those who indirectly did. Therefore, the previous experience on the disabled people is the significant factor which is encouraging teens to directly do more volunteer work. However, we found the limitation of their changes about knowledge and affect factors deprived from analysis, even if they directly engage in volunteer work in the facility a lot.
Thirdly, the previous education before teens do volunteer work doesn't have an effect on teens' reducing below four factors of the social distance toward the handicapped. The previous education performed once or two times is made sure not to be helpful to decreasing the sense of social distance about the disordered.
As a result of this research, I have several suggestions so as to improve better teenager's volunteer work and promote the social acception about the handicapped.
Firstly, by cooperating together, introducing more systematic program and providing motivate and various information for students, the welfare facilities and schools should reinforce the motivation of participation into volunteer work.
Secondly, the welfare facilities, schools and other organizations related with this should give teenagers more opportunity to take part in the direct volunteer work, not indirect one, by developing and offering specific program encouraging the direct volunteer work.
Thirdly, at least, we should set the first intention up which makes teens aware of proper conception and attitude about the handicapped. Besides, we need to make a action scheme and enable teens to participate in the volunteer work constantly through the previous education.
Finally, when special or diverse events related with this are held in local communities, we need special program that adults and students take part in together. In addition, to achieve these events successfully, various social welfare experts and juvenile instructors should be engage in the activities and events positively.
