포스트모던 그림책 특성 분석 = Analysis of the Postmodern Picturebooks

Nowadays, a growing number of people believe that a world view in our culture is turning towards post-modernism. This stream is reflected societal values, attitudes, and knowledge especially on children's picturebook. Picturebook is inseparable from postmodernism because we live in the postmodern world. However, despite the fact that the influence of postmodernism on the picturebook is a phenomenon that has been analysed and commented upon a number of times in recent years, I convince it remains poorly understood.
This study was conducted in order to analyze of postmodern picturebook's characteristics represented in picturebooks published in Korea. For this study I selected sixteen different postmodern picturebooks by three criteria. Also, three instruments were used to access postmodern picturebooks' characteristics.
The study were divided into three study questions were as follows:
1. What appear written and visual text's characteristics in postmodern picturebooks?

2. What(How) appear paratext's characteristics in postmodern picturebooks?

3. What tell postmodern picturebooks with devices of postmodernism?

The results of this study were as follows:
First, in postmodern picturebooks, written and visual text's characteristics appeared on various levels such as nontraditional ways of using plot, character, and setting, mixing or drawing upon multiple genres. In addition, postmodern picturebooks have mediums that are embodied through computer's programs especially by Adobe Photoshop. Also, Postmodern picturebook's characteristics in a written and visual text can be seen in the abundance of intertextual and intervisual references to art, design, philosophy, and cinema.
Second, in postmodern picturebooks, charateristics of paratext are frequently used for the sake of revealing the postmodern world. Unusual book formats are a possible narrative spaces which are carry some information because postmodern picturebooks are artefacts as they are a product of their social, historical, political, and technological times on postmodern worldview.
Third, postmodern picturebooks tell with postmodern worldview have boundary breaking, indeterminacy, decanonizaion, and so on. With all of these varying perspectives, it is difficult to say with certainty the specific characteristics that are necessary in order for a picturebook to be classified as postmodern picturebooks. However it is evident that postmodern picturebooks exist in our world by picture book's writer and drawer.
The results of this study show that postmodern picturebooks continually are created by writers and drawers around postmodern worldview. Though pomodern worldview is so interesting and advancing perspectives in children's literature, we could acquire misinterprets the worldview of postmodern picturebooks as if it is the most progressive views in a comtemporary picture book. we always have critical opinions about postmodern characteristics because postmodernism has become a part of our culture, including children's literature.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날, 더욱 많은 사람들이 우리 문화의 세계관이 포스트모더니즘으로 향한다고 믿고 있다. 이러한 조류는 특히 그림책에서 사회적 가치, 태도, 지식에 반영된다. 우리는 포스트모던 세계 안에서 살고 있기 때문에 그림책을 포스트모더니즘과 분리할 수 없다. 하지만 그림책에 대한 포스트모더니즘의 영향이 최근 몇 년 간 수차례 분석되고 논의되어짐에도 불구하고, 이에 대한 이해는 여전히 빈약한 상태에 머물러 있다.
본 연구에서는 한국에서 출판된 외국 그림책에 나타난 포스트모던 그림책의 특성을 분석하였다. 연구를 위해 16권의 포스트모던 그림책을 세 가지 준거해 의해 선정하였고 또한 포스트모던 그림책의 특성에 접근하기 위한 세 가지 도구들이 사용되었다.
본 연구의 목적에 따른 연구 문제는 다음과 같다.
연구문제 1: 포스트모던 그림책에 나타난 글과 그림의 특성은 무엇인가?
연구문제 2: 포스트모던 그림책에 나타난 준 텍스트(paratext)의 특성은 무엇인가?
연구문제 3: 포스트모던 그림책은 포스트모더니즘 장치로 무엇을 말하는가?
본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 포스트모던 그림책의 글-그림 텍스트의 특성은 플롯 사용의 방식, 인물, 배경, 다양한 장르의 결합을 통해 다양한 수준에서 나타난다. 게다가 포스트모던 그림책의 매체는 특히 Adobe Photoshop이라는 컴퓨터 프로그램에 의해 구현되며 상호텍스트적 혹은 상호비쥬얼적 장치들이 풍부하게 보인다.
둘째, 포스트모던 그림책의 준텍스트가 빈번하게 사용되는데 이는 포스트모던 세계를 드러내기 위함이다. 일반적이지 않는 책 판형은 가능한 네러티브 공간으로 몇 가지 정보를 전하며 이는 포스트모던 그림책이 사회적, 역사적, 기술적 시대의 산물이라는 것이다.
셋째, 포스트모던 그림책은 포스트모던 세계관으로 경계붕괴, 불확정성, 탈정전화와 그 밖의 것들을 말한다. 이러한 다양한 관점을 가지고 특정한 특성들이 포스트모던 그림책이라고 분류하기엔 어려울 수도 있다. 하지만 확실한 것은 포스트모던 그림책은 우리의 세계에 존재한다는 것이다.
본 연구 결과 포스트모던 그림책은 지속적으로 포스트모던 세계에서 작가들에 의해 창조되고 있다. 비록 포스트모던 세계관이 어린이 문학에서 너무나 흥미롭고 진보된 관점으로 잘못된 이해를 얻을 수 있을지도 모른다. 마치 현대 그림책의 가장 진보된 관점으로 말이다. 우리는 항상 포스트모던 특성에 비판적 견해를 가져야 한다. 그 이유는 포스트모던 그림책이 어린이 문학을 포함해서 우리 문화의 한 부분이 되었기 때문이다.
