The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of power relations on school violence by conducting an in-depth research on the power relations of juveniles at the field of school violence.
Previous studies on school violence failed to shed light on the relations of children at classrooms and schools while emphasizing the importance of group elements. Therefore, this study attempted to explore an individual in a group, the power of a group, and the dynamics of a group. In order to do that, the variables such as ‘the possibility of a power grab’ and ‘the desire of a power grab’ were used to classify the patterns of power relations and based on the patterns, the purpose of behavior, types, and the roles at the field of school violence were examined. In-dept interviews for 15 participants were conducted, adopting the case study research of Yin. The results of this study were as follows:
First, there were several groups in classrooms and schools. Of course, although there was communication among groups, most parts of the characteristics are segmental. In addition, the children’s power was different in the same group and each layer of the hierarchy among children in the same group was observed.
Second, the power relations of children at classrooms and schools had different aspects according to the members. There were children so called ‘playing children’ and ‘Iljin’ at schools and power systems outside schools had influences on power relations inside school.
Third, children showed friendly attitudes towards the children in the same group and they played a role in supporting each other and strengthening their behaviors. In addition, children enjoyed group’s power stronger than their power.
Fourth, power was built in friendship and then developed to power relation. Since children developed their power and strength through their bad friends and seniors and imitated their behavior, they were motivated and reinforced by the fact that ‘power could do everything’.
The concepts of ‘the possibility of a power grab’ and ‘the desire for a power grab’ used in this study are as followings:
‘The possibility of a power grab’ indicates resources that they can use to have a power or have as a basis and ‘the desire for a power grab’ means to hold a dominant position in the relations with others and to gain what they want or resources based on their power.
In this study, the possibility of a power grab in school violence was defined as ‘fight well’, ‘have a strong power’, ‘have a leadership and charisma’, ‘play with friends’, ‘have bad friends’, ‘have backgrounds (students)’, ‘have background (persons)’, ‘tall and big’, ‘speak fluently’, ‘have a good appearance’, ‘be loved by teachers’, ‘gain excellent academic achievements’, and ‘rich family’.
In this study, the desire for a power grab in school violence was considered as ‘deliver opinions and take an action’, ‘commit violence,’ ‘tease other children’, ‘make an effort to build friendship with other’s’, ‘want to hold a dominant position in the relations with other’s’, ‘like to play with bad children’, ‘try to fight to expand or strengthen the territory’, and ‘attracted by the merits of a power and want to have a power’.
In this study, ‘a ruler’ was defined as a person who had a strong possibility of a power grab and a strong desire for a power grab, ‘an influential person’ was a person who had a strong possibility of a power grab but had a week desire for a power grab, ‘a follower’ was considered as a person who had a weak possibility of a power grab but had a strong desire for a power grab, and ‘a recluse’ was defined as a person who had a weak possibility of a power grab but had a weak desire for a power grab. In addition, it was estimated that a ruler could change to a harmer, a strengthener, a helper, and an influential person could be a looker-on, and a follower could change to a strengthener, a helper, and a victim, and a recluse could be a victim and a looker-on.
First, the types of rulers were classified as ‘bad children’ at school and in many case, although they were the strong in their peer groups, they were the weak in the relations with their seniors.
Second, children with the type of influential persons were at ‘the edge of a power’, they assumed the attitude of an onlooker towards a harmer in school violence or supported them.
Third, children with the type of followers failed to have supports from others and they expressed their interests in children with a power or took an action to please the children. However, they seemed to be isolated from the relation with other children during the process.
Fourth, children with the type of recluses became ‘timid’ and lost their self-confidence since they failed to have supports from other children.
The theoretical and practical meanings in this study are as followings:
The theoretical meaning is to define the concepts of new variables; ‘the possibility of a power grab’ and ‘the desire for a power grab’ and to formalize power relations while explaining the relations of children at classrooms and schools as the concept of power relations.
The practical meaning of this study is to provide information about power relations, the dynamics of groups, and roles in school violence applicable to school violence prevention programs for juveniles and teachers.
