Today, elementary education is compulsory and has the fundamental principle to provide free education in our country. As the families which have only one child are growing, many parents want to educate their child at a private elementary school. This study compared the public and private elementary school parents’ satisfaction with school education. The purpose of this study is to suggest the vision of the school education comparing the satisfaction of parents on the school education and private education according to the types of school. The basic assumption was that there would be differences on satisfaction of parents between private school and public school. For this study, the satisfactions of parents on the school education were compared by the types of school, and 300 parents in public and private elementary school parents in Seoul Donbu district office were sampled and the results are as follows.
First, as for types of school, there were significant differences in all of sub-factors between public and private school parents for the satisfaction with curriculum activities at school. Private school parents’satisfaction was higher than public school parents’ satisfaction in all of sub-factors. Satisfaction with curriculum activities at school indicated significant differences in all of sub-factors between public and private school parents. Private school parents’ satisfaction was also higher than public school parents’ satisfaction in all of sub-factors. Regarding satisfaction with extra curriculum activities for private education, satisfaction on guidance showed significant differences between public and private school parents and both parents think school education is superior to private education.
Second, as for school year, there were significant differences between public and private schools for an academic satisfaction of instruction that is categorized for the following: class control, appropriate instruction, and appropriate performance evaluation. Especially, in the third and forth grades, all of sub-factors show significant differences. There were significant differences for satisfaction with curriculum activities between public and private schools. Regarding satisfaction with curriculum activities for private education, there weren’t significant differences between public and private schools.
Third, as for ages, there were significant differences between public and private schools for satisfaction with curriculum activities for private education. Especially, there were very significant differences in all of sub-factors under age 39. Regarding satisfaction with extra curriculum activities at school, there were significant differences for substantiality of personality education and study career guidance. There weren’t any significant differences in every area for satisfaction with extra curriculum activities for private education.
Forth, as for income, there were significant differences for satisfaction with curriculum activities at school in every area in only 2,000,000~4,000,000 won incomes. Only class control showed significant differences above 5,000,000 won incomes. Satisfaction with extra curriculum activities indicated general level of differences according to incomes. Regarding satisfaction with extra curriculum activities for private education, there weren’t any significant differences in all of sub-factors.
Based on the results, suggestions for development of school education are as follows.
First, the study for higher satisfaction with public school education is needed.
Second, the study for improvement of school curriculum activities and career guidance is needed.
Third, national-wide survey and analysis of satisfaction with school education and private education is needed.
Forth, the study for development standardized scales is needed in order for reliable measurements of satisfaction.
