This thesis analyzes effects of the education using experience-mathematics on academic achievement and mathematical disposition of underachievers. To achieve the purpose of this study, the thesis establishes and applies the research problems as follows:
A. Is the education using experience-mathematics effective on improving the academic achievement of underachievers?
B. Can the education using experience-mathematics induce underachievers to interest and positive attitude on mathematics?
In order to perform this study, we have selected second grade mathematics underachievers who rank lower than 10% of entire mathematics score at a J middle school located in Gyung Gi Do and divide forty students into experimental group and control group. In experimental group students have learned mathematics based on experience, whereas in control group based on traditional method using worksheet.
This study concludes the following results.
First, when comparing experimental group with control group, there was a meaningful difference in the achievement of cognitive aspects test. Therefore, experience based method in learning mathematics has positive effects on improving the academic performance since students cognized a mathematical principle and concept more easily while learning by direct and actual experience.
Second, as for questions related with interest level and learning attitude, students in experimental group have shown more positive response and less negative response than those in control group.
In order to complement some problems occurred in this study and research more effectively later, we suggest some issues on the authority of the research results.
First, this study suggests that the sampling survey should consider a regional characteristic and be expanded from a small town to a big city.
Second, according to the long term plan, we should adapt the experience based method to the instruction within grades, terms , and units so that the experience based instruction should be introduced and developed constantly although the experience based instruction is restricted within one unit(first-order function) among many courses of middle school mathematics of second grade in this research.
third, teachers and related experts should have more an interest and collaborate in order to generalize the experience based instruction.
Fourth, the teacher should help students to recognize the necessity of the experience based study and lead to speculate vastly.
fifth, in order to induce underachievers to have an interest in the experience-mathematics based instruction, we should consider not only an academic depression but also an ability, a natural environment, and a psychological condition.
