The purpose of this study is to analyze basic materials in searching an effective teaching method that the young children's language and musical ability can be promoted through lyrics-changing activity that applied traditional nursery rhymes by reconsidering the educational value of traditional nursery rhymes and analyzing the effect of the lyrics-changing activity in traditional nursery rhymes on young children's language and musical ability.
With these purposes, the research problems were established as follows.
1. What effect the lyrics-changing activity which applied traditional nursery rhymes has on young children's language ability?
2. What effect the lyrics-changing activity which applied traditional nursery rhymes has on young children's musical ability?
The subjects used in this study were 60 children whose mean age was 5 year old in Y kindergarten W kindergarten at K city, 30 children for experimental group and 30 children for control group.
It was randomly assigned as experimental group and control group, there was no significant difference in the score of pre-test in land, age, and children’s musical ability and language thus two groups was regarded as the similar group. The experiment group was conducted the lyrics-changing activity and the control group was conducted the movement-expressing activity by utilizing traditional nursery rhymes total of 15 times, 3 times a week for five weeks.
As for the test tool in this study, sub-fields such as ‘common sense’, ‘understanding’, ‘vocabulary’, ‘commonality’, and ‘sentence’ out of language test in Korean-Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence(K-WPPSI), which was made in Korean style by Park Hye-won, Gwak Geum-ju, and Park Gwang-tae(1996) was selected and used to measure language ability. young Children’s musical ability was measured by sub-fields such as ‘dynamics’, ‘rhythm’, ‘height’, ‘tone color’, ‘accord’ and ‘appreciation’ in music aptitude, which was manufactured by Korea Guidance. The average and standard deviation of the collected materials after pre-and-post tests were calculated by using statistical program (SPSS 12.0), and the difference by group was compared and analyzed with t-test.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, the experimental group, which carried out lyrics-changing activity that applied traditional nursery rhymes, was clarified to be statistically higher than the control group in the whole language-ability mark, which conducted a movement-expressing method utilizing traditional nursery rhymes. Also, even in the mark of ‘common sense’, ‘understanding’, ‘vocabulary’ and ‘commonality’, which are sub-fields in language ability, the experimental group was indicated to be statistically higher than the control group. However, in the mark of ‘sentence’ sphere, the statistically significant difference was not shown between two groups.
Second, the experimental group, which carried out lyrics-changing activity that applied traditional nursery rhymes, was clarified to be statistically higher than the control group in the whole musical-ability mark, which conducted a movement-expressing method utilizing traditional nursery rhymes. Also, even in the mark of ‘dynamics’, ‘rhythm’, ‘height’, ‘tone color’, ‘accord’ and ‘appreciation’, which are sub-fields in musical ability, the experimental group was indicated to be statistically higher than the control group.
Consequently, it is suggested that the experimental group, which carried out lyrics-changing activity that applied traditional nursery rhymes, has a positive effect on enhancing children’s language and musical ability, than the control group, which conducted a movement-expressing method utilizing traditional nursery rhymes. Accordingly, it is expected to effectively promote young children's musical and language ability by actively applying lyrics-changing activity in traditional nursery rhymes on the early childhood education.
