The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the collage activity through the poem appreciation on creativity, collage expression capability and drawing expression capability of young children.
Subjects of this study were a total of 40 young children at age 5 who were in C Kindergarten located in G City. The 20 young children from one class were assigned to the experimental group and 20 young children from the other class were assegned to the control group.
The experimental group was participated in collage activities through the children's poem appreciation, whereas the control group did plane drawing activities through the children's poem appreciation for 16 sessions.
Comprehensive creativity test tool (K-CCTYC) developed by Jeon Kyung-won (1999), the collage capability scale amended and supplemented by Cho So-young (2004), and the drawing expression capability scale developed by Ji Seong-ae (2001) were used. The data from pre-and post-test of the experimental and the control group were analyzed though SPSS 12.0.
The results of this study are shown as follows:
First, the experimental group participated in collage activitics through children's poem appreciation had statistically higher score in the entire creativity than the control group with the plane drawing activities through the children's poem appreciation. From the sub-categories of creativity, the experimental group had the statistically higher scores in uniqueness, flexibility, language creativity, drawing creativity, body creativity than the control group.
Second, the experimental group had the statistically higher score in the overall capability of the collage expression than the control group. The experimental group had the statistically higher score than control group in all sub-categories of the collage expression capability, including independency of thesis expression, diversity of material use, appropriateness of collage expression, detailed description of collage expression, and harmonious screen composition of collage expression.
Third, the experimental group had the statistically higher score in overall drawing expression capability than control group. The experimental group had the statistically higer scores than the control group in all of sub-categories of the drawing representation capability, including basic drawing with the merge of line, various colors, detail description, harmonious composition, diverse shape, thesis related representation, creativity of representation, completion of drawing, representation and language linkage.
The results of this study, implicate that the collage activities through the children's poem appreciation enhance the creativity, collage expression capability, and drawing expression capability of young children. Therefore, the collage activities through the children's poem appreciation implemented in this study are expected to be used positively as an effective teaching method to promote the creativity and art representation capability of young children.
