The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference of social intelligence of young children raised between urban and rural area. It is also studied how it would be different by genders for those regions.
Based on the purpose, this study proposed research questions as follows:
1. Is there difference of social intelligence of young children raised between urban and rural area?
2. Is there difference of social intelligence by genders of young children raised between urban and rural area?
2-1. Is there difference of social intelligence of young boys raised between urban and rural area?
2-2. Is there difference of social intelligence of young girls raised between urban and rural area?
Subjects for this study were 89 of five-year-old children (40 boys and 49 girls) enrolled in 11 kindergartens in Yeonsu-gu and Bupyeong-gu in Incheon for children in urban area, and 88 of five-year-old children (46 boys and 42 girls) enrolled in 11 kindergartens in Kangwha-gun and Ongjin-gun in Incheon for children in rural area. 36 teachers who took care of them evaluated the test.
For evaluation, this study used the social intelligence evaluation tool for teachers developed by Yang SeungHee and Park NangJa(2005), in which social intelligence is regarded to be consisted of four sub-factors - social knowledge, social sensitivity, social expressivity and social fluidity.
This study used t-test to investigate the difference of social intelligence of young children raised between urban and rural area, and to study the difference by genders for those regions. Data obtained from this study were analyzed with SPSS for windows 12.0.
The findings of this study are summarized as follows:
First, it was found that there was no statistically significant difference in the total scores of social intelligence of young children raised between urban and rural area. However, in relation to social knowledge, a sub-factor of social intelligence, it was significantly higher among the children raised in rural area than among those in urban area. There was no significant difference in social sensitivity, social expressivity, and social fluidity which are sub-factors of social intelligence between the two areas.
Second, it was also found that it was different by gender of young children. There was no significant difference in the total scores of social intelligence of boys between urban and rural area, but in relation to social knowledge and social expressivity, sub-factors of social intelligence, they were significantly higher among the boys in rural area than among those in urban area. There was no significant difference in social sensitivity and social fluidity which are sub-factors of social intelligence between the two areas.
In relation to girls, there was no significant difference in the total scores of social intelligence among them between urban and rural area, but social knowledge, a sub-factor of social intelligence, was significantly higher among the girls in rural area than among those in urban area. There was no significant difference in social sensitivity, social expressivity and social fluidity which are sub-factors of social intelligence between the two areas.
Based on the findings of this study, we can conclude as follows:
First, there is difference of social intelligence of young children raised between urban and rural area. There is no significant difference in the total scores of social intelligence of young children raised between urban and rural area, but, in relation to social knowledge, a sub-factor of social intelligence, it is significantly higher among the children raised in rural area than in urban area.
Second, it is different by genders of young children. In relation to boys, there is no significant difference in the total scores of social intelligence among them between urban and rural area, but in relation to social knowledge and social expressivity, sub-factors of social intelligence, they are significantly higher among the boys in rural area than among those in urban area.
In relation to girls, there is no significant difference in the total scores of social intelligence among them between urban and rural area, but social knowledge, a sub-factor of social intelligence is significantly higher among the girls in rural area than among those in urban area.
