The purpose of this study is to understand the process of encounter and leaving of children, and their meaning when they experienced it. For this study, I have performed the qualitative study with participation observation. While I entered the life world of children, and observe the process of encounter and leaving in many times, my research interests are as follows:
First, what is the process of encounter and leaving of children in the kindergarten? For understanding the process, I observe and describe the manner of encounter and leaving for each that focused on the children's behaviors and the routines of kindergarten. When children come to kindergarten, they meet their friends, and bring several objects. Before they enter the classroom, they show and exchange the objects. Also, they plan the place they will play, and then they meet their friends there. For this encounter, children run and take a seat to play centers and have toys. In play centers, children imitate other children's behaviors and tell same things they have. Also they say 'make friends' or 'hapche(sum of parts)' and move to play in other play centers. Finishing free plays, they can encounter other children in order to have lunch together. When they go home, they can meet the children who come together to kindergarten in the morning, because there are two arrival times in kindergarten.
There is a discussion program that children have to leave their friends. In this time, sitting seats are fixed so they can meet other children around the sitting seat. Therefor children can't encounter the children who they want to meet and also this happens in free playing time. There are several reasons for children to leave their friends in free playing time. For example, they are conflict, a free snack time, computer activity and the small group activity that is guided by teacher. Besides the reasons mentioned above, children part from friends in leaving play centers without saying anything or because of play centers where many children come in and out frequently. After leaving, children can choose the solitary play, the small group activity that is guided by teacher or enter into different group. Also the children who is eating the lunch lately and is different from the time of attending the kindergarten can't encounter children with whom they want to play.
Secondly, what do children experience in the process of encounter and leaving, and what is the meaning of it? For this research question, I tried to find the meaning of encounter and leaving that based on the process of it. As a result, I found the characteristics that children experience continually. These characteristics are follows: 1. Affiliation and secession 2. invasion and protection 3. sharing, possession and friendship 4. instrumental relationship and essential relationship. The meaning of encounter and leaving is categorized by four characteristics and then I interpret the meaning of encounter and leaving.
In affiliation and secession, children experience affiliation and secession through the process of encounter and leaving. That is, children who want to affiliate a whole group belong to it through the imitative behavior. Also children experience affiliation and secession by making the groups that is focused on the play interest. But as they change their play interest, children secede from the group. The children decide the affiliation and secession by themselves. But children sometimes give up the play interest and affiliate to another group. In case of different play interest and daily routines in the kindergarten, these are factors that limited affiliation and secession.
When children encounter other children and play with them, playing children think it to invade the other children access to the playing group. Accordingly the children defend invasion of the other children and protect oneself against it. And the children use the protective technique for defend the encounter against the invasion. It is reason that the children use the protective technique for the protection of interactive space.
During children encounter and play children share objects and space. As they do, the concept of sharing is different from the concept of sharing in home, and is possessed communally. Children know that toys and educational materials are communally owned in kindergarten. But the joint ownership is different from the concept of sharing. The sharing is not merely the sharing of toys and space in children. While the children encounter and play with other children, children share the activity with other children. This sharing is related to make friendship and children develop the friendship through the experience of it.
Children learn the various social skills through the experience of encounter and leaving. These social skills are the knowledge to be acquired by the peer relationship. In this case, peer relationship is the instrumental relationship. The instrumental relationship is for children to relate with peer in order to achieve their purpose. For this relationship, children use the skills they already known until now. These skills are useful for children to relate with children, but the peer relationship is not achieved by the skills only. Children experience the pleasure through the peer relationship. This relationship is the discourse relationship and the pleasure is experienced through it. This is the essential part that the children relate with peer and is also essential relationship. But children do not only relate with peer in the essential relationship. Therefore the interchange of instrumental and essential relationship is necessary. The leaving exist between the instrumental and essential relationship. Accordingly the children experience the two relationships through encounter and leaving and become responsible being.
