As sudden increasing the number of student to study applied music, many universities have established applied music-interrelated department. Every year, school of applied music is increasing, however, it generates various problems related to education and there is no basic solution even taking several counterplan.
Therefore, this study primarily considers current status and curriculum of applied music education in college and university and surveys educational objective, curriculum, education method, demands and current status of education and administration, problems and solutions, and remedy in subject of 197 students and 50 professors by choosing 4 universities and 4 colleges among schools establishing the department of applied music at present september 2006.
Focusing on the survey result obtained, demand and current status of applied music program is as follows.
In the recognition item of demand for applied music program, both students and professors realize that education environment and administration is most important. In current status, likewise, recognition index for education environment and administration is lowest. This means that most of them are not satisfied with practice room, equipments and its use.
In the problem for applied music education program, it points out a necessity of curriculum by level, lack of practice room, a necessity of subdivided education program by major and genre, lack of information and support for direction after graduation.
It is about to suggest an improvement plan for problems of current state of applied music education examined above based on such results.
First, it should be expanded education environment and facilities
Unlike existing departments, applied music basically uses electronic sound equipment creating high power, so it needs enough facilities including recording room and practice room for various producing class such as recording as well as soundproof facilities.
Second, curriculum should be improved for cultivation of popular music expert in various area.
Nowadays, the curriculum in each university is only for a player and a composer. However, in popular music area, it requires an expert not only playing and composition but also various fields (such as record producer, stage director, performance marketing, performance planner, management and producer for music in broadcasting station). It is necessary to develop systemized curriculum for professional musician cultivation based on abundant experiences.
Third, it should offer various opportunities to students.
The system may allow a student to attend and to learn several class that he likes until finding what he loves, and to test his possibility to the full. In addition, during semester, students should have diverse experiences through field practice in studio, performance place and agency so it provides an opportunity to choose a field suitable for oneself and to get a job after graduation.
Forth, it is about appointment of a talented professor /lecturer.
Generally, for an employment, an academic background is prior to rather ability or suitability in applied music field. Considering the particularity of university, it is right that an academic career is the requirement to have. However, operating the department by employing a man unsuitable for that field may bring about more serious problem. Besides, even in high school, applied music is spreaded, however, an qualified expert to educate is really insufficient. Therefore, it should be cultivated an qualified expert by newly establishing major or curriculum related to applied music in current education university or graduate school.
To develop Korean popular music and to cultivate professional applied musician, it may be continued an academic study for overall applied music education including reorganization of discriminated curriculum, support of education environment and introduction of field practice course.
