Recently, disabled children are increasing with industrialization and urbanization, and their birth is causing many troubles to people who bring up them and home surroundings.
When having disabled children, most family finds difficulties in financial, psychological and social aspects. Moreover, this may create the conflicts and weaken member's unit within the family, but not all the cases are included. On the contrary, those family members might have positive experience as well when overcoming many troubles, such as promoting spiritual maturation and widening mental vision for other people.
This study, unlike other past studies dealt with the burden and stress for the disabled within the family, is focused on family resilience that facilitates adaptation and positive function, and is intended to see if there is meaningful effectiveness of family resilience-based group program to reduce parenting stress and to improve parenting self-efficacy for mothers with disabled children. In order to do this job, the group program which is aimed at seven mothers of the "K" Disabled Children Parent Union in Gimhae was carried out for 10 times by a worker and assistant and the results were analyzed through the organized questionnaires and behavior diary.
The results of the family resilience-based group program were as follows:
First, the group program has an significant effect on reducing parenting stress. In addition, parental distress and difficult temperament of child, which are subordinate factors, were also effective, but parent-child dysfunctional interaction was not.
Second, the program has an significant effect on improving parenting self-efficacy for the mothers with disabled children, and general parenting self-efficacy subordinate factor of parenting self-efficacy was effective too. However, the others health, communication, education, control have no significant effects.
Finally, according to the behavior diary and remarks of the mothers after finishing all program, it shows that the program has an effect on reducing parenting stress and improving parenting self-efficacy.
With these conclusions, in order to decrease parenting stress and increase parenting self-efficacy of mothers who are under the family resilience-based group program, it is suggested as follows:
First, in this study, the group program includes Belief systems, Organizational patterns and Communication processes which are subordinate factors introduced by Walsh('1998). It is advised to study family resilience constantly, to analyze other existing disabled children family programs and to develop detailed programs reflecting family's needs so that the program could be more effective.
Second, it is needed to revise and complement the program to improve parent-child dysfunctional interaction sub-factor of parenting stress and health, communication, education, control sub-factors of parenting self-efficacy.
Third, as explained at the limitation of study, this program did not cover all mothers of disabled children in the world, so it is hard to generalize. Therefore, it is required that tests be more conducted in both quantity and quality regarding family resilience to generalize.
Fourth, the sample sizes were small in this study, so it has a statistical weakness, and it was not classified by disabilities and hard to find common troubles. Therefore, it should be statistically complemented in order to verify effectiveness of pre-posttests.
Fifth, parents gathering and family meeting should be constantly provided to maintain effectiveness of this program for mothers with disabled children, and supportable family service is needed to use in daily life.
Lastly, during the program, there were many worries and difficulties of fathers, brothers and sisters as well as things related to parenting stress and parenting self-efficacy of mothers. Therefore it is mandatory that efficient program development and study be continued.
