The quantitative expansion of education has produced many students with underachievement. they lack a self-confidence and have a sense of inferiority.
Therefore, using the art which they can be contact with easily and have an interest in as a medium of therapy, the group art therapy was executed for the purpose of expressing their self-image and investigating the improvement in their self- esteem.
The program applied to this study was based on Group Art Therapy Program(Korean Art Therapy Association, 2000), Self-esteem Strengthening Program(Lee, Sung-hee, 2004), The Effect of Group Art Therapy on Improvement in Self-esteem for Children with Underachievement (Oh, Hee-sook, 2002) and The Group Counseling for the Art Therapy (The Associasion of Counseling of Kyeong Nam Province, 2003) and it was adjusted and supplemented to the purpose of this study. For the self-growth program applied to this study was based on Effects of a Personal Growth Group Counseling on the Self-esteem of Under-achievers in Middle School(Kim, Young-lim, 2002), The Impact of the Self-Concept Program on the Self-Concept of Underachievers(Kim, Soo-ryong, 2001) and it was adjusted and supplemented to the purpose of this study.
The important results of this study are as follows:
First, according to the analysis through pre-posttest in experimental and comparison group for academic efficacy, experimental group applied the art therapy program was more effective than comparison group applied the self-growth program in the academic efficacy. That is, low variables of academic efficacy showed effective in the level of academic achievement efficacy and academic self-regulating learning efficacy.
Second, according to the analysis through pre-posttest in experimental and comparison group for self-esteem, comparison group applied the self-growth program was more effective than experimental group applied the art therapy program in the self-esteem. That is, low variables of self-esteem showed effective in the level of general self and home self.
Consequently, it was proved that the group art therapy for students with underachievement was effective on improvement in academic efficacy, but it was proved that the self-growth program for students with underachievement was effective on improvement in the self-esteem.
