The purpose of this study is to examine the recognition and conflict of participating teachers and non-particip ating teachers for operation of research schools and to propose a good way to manage research schools in the future. The following study topics were selected for the above purposes: First, how do participating teachers and non-participating teachers for operation of research schools recognize? Second, what are the causes of conflicts between participating teachers and non-participating teachers regarding the operation of research schools? Third, how should participating teachers and non-participating teachers in research schools resolve conflicts and operate the research schools? Subjects of this study were six pairs of participating teachers and non-participating teachers from six research middle schools which were designated by Busan Office of Education in 2005, and data were gathered from interviews by questionnaires and analyzed. Eleven questionnaires fabricated for this study were used and phone and e-mail interviews were used to add supplementary information. Questionnaires and responses were classified into different elements to understand the holistic meaning of the results. The following list the results of this study on the recognition of participating teachers and non-participating teachers for operation of research schools: First, schools must meet certain requirements, gather faculties' opinions, and undergo deliberation of management to apply for their designation as research schools. Participating teachers shall be selected through a "Selection Committee" in prior to the application and shall receive appropriate duties based on their capacities. Second, research points which are given to contributive faculties in research schools shall be given according to their performances, and various incentives shall be given for non-participating teachers who do not consider promotions to participate in research activities. Third, generalization standards for research schools shall undergo strict examinations to eliminate all problematic issues and shall use the resulting database from management for systemization, followed by constant utilization and training. Fourth, performance reports shall boldly depart from uniform and formal reports and shall open up all procedures of research and enjoy 'educational festivals,' including joint reports, to share findings. The following list the results of this study on existing conflicts between participating teachers and non-participating teachers for operation of research schools: First, to resolve existing conflicts in the application process, opinions shall be gathered from all faculties and a deliberation shall be held with the Board of Trustees.Application decision shall be made when schools meet all requirements and have well-founded research topics. Second, conflicts in the operation of research schools are often caused by excessive expenditure and low educational efficiency. Third, to resolve existing conflicts regarding research points, a system must be established to give out research points based on the workload and performance of each faculty member and to provide various incentives to participating teachers with no research points.
