In the 21C as it is an information age, problem solving abilities are just required. However the problems in textbooks presented to children at classes, mostly they are closed ones that are standardized, asking one-answering, therefore they are not enough to stimulate students' independence on learning nor bring up their 'problem solving abilities. Besides they make students form negative beliefs and attitudes toward mathematics. This study, initiated with interest in Student's Processes of Problem Solving, suggests computing answers by the capacity of an individual student and using open-ended problems, which were expected to improve problem solving abilities to show mathematical thinking features.
It was subjected to one middle school student conducted five times, once a week, a span of one-hour, respectively with lessons on geometry of eighth grader of mathematics curriculum and is to use a qualitative case study method. Particularly, it avoided using a quantitative study method to practice open-ended problems and pursues introducing student's answer papers on open-ended problems specifically. Accordingly it presented how the student did his mathematical thinking, what he needed for that and how the metacognitive factor appeared.
The result of this study was documented according to Polya's four problem solving steps, comprehending the thinking features on the process of open-ended problem solving of students in eighth grader of mathematics.
Based on those results, the following conclusions were drawn:
First, in the process of solving an open-ended problem, the student tended to neglect the stage of understanding a problem. However as the lessons proceeded with practicing an open-ended problem, the student was observed to read and understand it with more prudence and also to be able to simplify the problem and skip the concrete thinking processes.
Second, the student did the concrete thinking when devising a plan on solving open-ended problems and he was not good at explaining his plan clearly. Nevertheless the student attempted to solve the open-ended problem with more various ways and became to have the metacognitive knowledge, leading him to think back on his thinking processes systematically.
Third, to survey the stage of Carrying Out the Plan in the process of solving an open-ended problem, it was an effective control to make the student an excellent problem solver or a failing factor to be absence of control mechanism. Also, it is observed that such control level was improved through the process of solving open-ended problems.
Fourth, the student recognized the necessity of looking back stage through open-ended problems, adjusting his thought on it as a checking accounts to as deriving other ways of solving problems. The open-ended problems affected positive influence on improving problem solving ability through applying to and generalizing of mathematical problems in actual life.
Fifth, in the process of solving open-ended problems, the student was stimulated to grow metacognitive capacity and flexible thinking by mutual circulation of Polya's problem solving steps.
Lastly, it was found by interviewing with the student that although open-ended problems were more difficult to solve than one-answer problems, there was no negative reactions, instead he enjoyed it and had the sense of achievement. The student was influenced positively by far on forming mathematical belief systems, providing him a challenging spirit and developing his mathematical power, compared a regular math-class to one with open-ended problem, more than expected.
