This study is to encourage children in elementary care center to eliminate shyness, promote self-respect and improve self-expression ability through bibliotherapy. For the purpose, it designs a bibliotherapy that can be applied for real life of children and identifies its effects, aiming at preparing plans for more effective bibliotherapy.
The questions presented in this study are as follows:
1. What influence bibliotherapy has on formation of self-respect of children in care center ?
2. What influence bibliotherapy activities have on behaviors of children in care center who are very shy ?
3. What influence bibliotherapy activities have on change of self-expression behaviors of children in care center who are very shy ?
To demonstrate the effects of this study, it selected six elementary scholl students who have less self-expression ability. 15 terms of the program were provided from August 31. 2005 to November 3. 2005, and the hour of one term was one and 20 minutes.
Shyness test, self-respect test and expression test were provided to the children, and the results were compared through t-test before and after the program.
The transitional progress of children's behaviors are presented as follows:
At the beginning of the program, as children live together and go to the same school, they were not say. However, it was very difficult to form familiarity between children because some of them showed negative feeling to the other children and some did not face the author.
In the middle period of the study, reliability was formed between the author and children, the children thought meaning of family in broad sense, negative feeling between children was much decreased, they came to use positive languages and their self-expression ability was increased.
In the late period, they showed higher attention to books and enjoyed post-activities. They had generous attitude to consider others and themselves, and the ability to express their ideas was improved.
In consideration of the results above, in respect to bibliotherapy, there was a significant difference between children who are very shy. The average of self-respect increased, but there was no significant difference between them and the difference in effects of improved self-expression ability was significant.
According to statistical analysis, the effect of shyness test and expression test was demonstrated. To improve bibliotherapy, data list should be prepared. For theoretical support and effectiveness of bibliotherapy, questionnaire and manual should be prepared to demonstrate the effects of the therapy objectively.
In conclusion, the range of bibliotherapy activities should be expanded and through parents education, preventive reading therapy is necessary.
