This thesis, as the subject suggests, deals with the research on 'Dokkaebi', particularly, on its facial form/appearance and the relevant literature in Korea, China and Japan in which they were reflected.
The introduction firstly clarifies the purpose of the research by examining the nature of Dokkaebi as terminology and analyzes the formal characteristics of its facial patterns based on the 'dreadful' character that its nature projects. Secondly, it introduces the research methods used, namely the research of its relevant literature in which, the notion of Dokkaebi as well as its facial pattern, as its representational form, in the records and documents were analyzed to extract and define its 'Formlessness' as an important and distinctive feature; also, as to the research of its image as another research method, the diverse facial appearance of Dokkaebi was categorized according to countries, time and media and presented in the form of a 'Dokkaebi Map of China, Korea and Japan'. Thirdly, the introduction states that the scope of the research was restricted to only the facial appearance of Dokkaebi found in traditional Asian roofing tiles known as '기와(Giwa)'.
In <Chapter 1>, the significance of 'Dokkaebi Patterns' was projected as the presupposition to examine the correlation between the notion of Dokkaebi and its patterns, as its representational form. The definition and origin of Dokkaebi was firstly examined while the nature of its patterns was also considered with regard to its social role in terms of the 'Heavenly(天紋)/Earthly Order(人紋). In other words, the Dokkaebi pattern as a part of the 'Earthly Order'. [1.2.1; 1.2.2] Through such approach, it became evident that the patterns possessed certain ambiguity [1.3] which was to be found in the appearance of Dokkaebi and its term and was later discussed more in detail. [1.3.1; 1.3.2]
<Chapter 2> focuses on the nature of Dokkaebi, which is based on the correlation between its notion and its pattern as its representational form, and presents a research based on the Korean, Chinese and Japanese literature such as 성호사설 (Seonghosaseol), 석보상절(Sukbosangjul), 산해경(SanHaeKyung) in which, the record of Dokkaebi was investigated based on typology, in order to examine the various appearance and types found in the documentations. [2.1.1; 2.1.2; 2.1.3] The various appearance of Dokkaebi was also categorized according to animal, human and satyr-types [2.2]. These different types were also classified along time and media [3.; 4.] through which, the diverse dreadfulness originating from its facial appearance was analogized according to countries. Based on such research, it was concluded that the idea of Dokkaebi includes the dreadful appearance as well as the conceptual part of it.
In <Chapter 5>, the characteristics of the symbolic form were examined by analyzing the diverse dreadful qualities reflected by the aesthetics of Korean / Chinese / Japanese Dokkaebi and the distinctive form was extracted [5.1; 5.2; 5.3] based on which, the formative qualities and similarities of the 3 countries were examined. [5.4]
The purpose of the thesis is to interpret the idea of Dokkaebi, based on its correlation between its notion and pattern as its representational form, as a holistic notion inclusive of the 'dreadfulness' as an unconscious will to perceive it as well as the concrete form of the monsters projected upon. <Chapter 6> deals with identifying the general dreadfulness or fear of Dokkaebi, specifically based on the Korean version. The nature of this dreadfulness is a part of the unconscious mind referring to Dokkaebi in general and this was also a process to identify the notion of Dokkaebi as a two-sided, intermediate and spiritual entity between God, Ghost and man.
The thesis enabled me to analyze the diverse appearance of Dokkaebi originating from its dreadfulness and to project this information in the form of a Dokkaebi Map of China, Korea and Japan' [7] Furthermore, it became evident that this dreadfulness was the most essential element in being recognized as Dokkaebi.
