The purpose of this study is to help children form desirable reading habits of their own through developing and applying the "The 3-Stage Integrated Reading Program".
To accomplish the purpose of the study, this researcher raised the following research questions in the following.
1. How should the reading environment as the stage of reading motivation be formed ?
2. How should the Integrated Reading Education Program be applied to the stage of cognition ?
3. How should the Integrated Reading Education Program be applied to the stage of response ?
This study reviewed theoretical backgrounds of the Integrated Reading Activity Program in terms of the purpose and significance of reading education, reading instruction in accordance with the stage of child development, reading education and the 7th National Educational Curriculum, and factors affecting reading habit formation.
Also, a method of integrated reading education program and a related stage-based program were devised considering existing Integrated Reading Instruction Models.
This study also applied the Integrated Reading Education Program consisting of 3 stages : reading motivation, cognition and response to 40 children at Class 5-A from OO elementary school located in Gimhae. Data obtained here were statistically processed using test devices like a questionnaire form and portfolio and then compared between before and after the program application. Additionally, the surveyed students were asked to provide self-evaluation and written impressions regarding the Integrated Reading Education Program.
Furthermore, the researcher actually devised instructions for the Integrated Reading Activity Program in accordance with its stage. The program was applied in accordance with three stages, reading motivation, cognition and response. The stage of cognition was classified into comprehensive cognition and cognitive proliferation while, that of response, was classified into comprehensive response and responsive proliferation. In relation, activities and their effects and examples were specified in accordance with the stage of the program.
In conclusion, a variety of integrated reading activities used here provided a climate of positive reading to children who lost in existing reading instruction orienting comprehension and writing impressions. They also made children feel the pleasure of reading and have the attitude of consistent reading by motivating them to read and further raise their skills of appreciating writings and expressing them creatively. Thus the activities contributed to forming children’s desirable reading habits. This study indicates that they would also help establish desirable reading habits in the actual field of education.
The Integrated Reading Education Program devised and applied here should be continuously supplemented to be more valid and effective. Further studies about new reading programs and materials are needed to keep pace with the 21st century’s society of knowledge and information.
