Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine effects of sensory-integration training with ball on motor skill in preschool children who were EMR(educable mental retardation).
Subjects were selected to 13 children who were the ages of 5~7( MRE, n=7, 72.71±4.78months; MRC, n=7, 73.83±5.26months)years of EMR at sensory motor rehabilitation class of Y public health center in B metropolitan city. They were divided into two groups MRE(mental retardation exercise group) and MRC(mental retardation control group). NMR(nonhandicap group without mental retardation; 70.00±1.92months) was 14 children without mental retardation(nonhandicap) at kindergarten in Y elementary school.
MRE carried out sensory-integration training with ball conducted 3 times per week for 30~45minutes per day during 16weeks.
Test items were used motor skill(TGMD-2), body sway(BPM), and Scale of Practical Abilities(KISE-scales of development).
The difference of intra and inter group was analyzed paired t-test, and one way ANOVA(Duncan). Significant level was set α=.05.
Results of the analysis were as the follows:
1. Motor skill
1) MRE was increased in locomotor, object control, and gross motor. At posttest, MRE was lower than NMR in all skills but higher than MRC.
2) Locomotor skill, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 57.25% to 76.91% after training, MRC was decreased from 53.08% to 49.91%.
3) Object control skill, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 54.60% to 69.70% after training, MRC was decreased from 58.32% to 45.94%.
4) Gross motor skill, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 56.28% to 73.70% after training, MRC was decreased from 55.06% to 48.17%.
2. Body sway
1) Mean balance and sway number were no significant difference within and between groups, but MRE was decreased after training but MRC was increased in sway number.
2) Sway number, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 74.17% to 83.11% after training, and MRC was decreased from 74.35% to 62.68%.
3. Scale of practical abilities
1) MRE was increased in the dressing, and personal Hygiene. MRE was lower than NMR in personal hygiene on pretest but no difference on posttest.
2) Dressing, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 74.35% to 75.53% after training, MRC was increased from 52.60% to 55.24%.
3) Personal hygiene, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 72.74% to 85.13% after training, MRC was increased from 84.83% to 89.63%.
4) Safety and social awareness, catch-up rate of MRE was increased from 43.02% to 58.24% after training, MRC was decreased from 57.75% to 54.56%.
