The purpose of this study is to define the systematic improvement method for the life of the handicapped by suggesting the new residential environment. For fulfilling this goal this dissertation studies the comparisons among origin family, Group Home and rehabilitation institution focused upon the achievement of the handicapped in activities of daily living, social support, the occupational status, and residential circumstances.
The extent to which mentally disabled persons of origin family practice was also found a critical factor considerably affecting the quality of life of those persons. The better skills of physical movement and independent life and more use of community resources mentally disabled adults have, the better quality of life as a whole and better sub-areas of the quality there would be.
Mentally disabled persons residing Group Home were better in activities of daily living than those at origin family or residential institution. As far as the former disabled were concerned, activities of daily living were most influential to quality of life. Social support was a factor critical to the quality of life of mentally disabled persons of Group Home. It was found that the more use of community resources and better activities of daily living, especially independent life, those residents of group- home had , the better quality of life as a whole and better sub-areas of the quality there were. And it was also found that mentally disabled persons of residental institution were highest in quality of life, of which social support and the extent of community resource use were critical factors. The extent was found most influential to those residents of residential institution. As far as mentally disabled persons residing at residential institution were concerned!, the extent of community resource use were affecting all sub-areas of quality of life, especially most to rights and social integration.
The extent to which mentally disabled persons of residential living institution used community resources were affecting their activities of daily living, especially independent life. It was also greatly influencing the quality of life of those persons on the basis of their independent life. In other words, mentally disabled person could have a better quality of life if they utilize community resources more, even though they have fewer skills of personal behavior and physical movement. The quality of life would be even better if those persons use such resources more and at the same time have better activities of daily living.
First of all, the handicapped living in origin family shows the best achievement result in the area of the handicapped in activities of daily living and social support. This implies that their activities of daily living achievement drew the positive result in social support. Furthermore, this seems that the higher the abilities of handicapped for physical movement. independence, and the support of local community, the higher the higher the total quality of life .
Second, the handicapped in the Group Home shows the best ability in daily life achievement. This has very close relationship with their social support. They show that the higher they live independently, the more improving in the quality of life.
Finally, one of the ways of improving lives of mentally disabled persons who are accommodated at residential institution is to promote the utilization of community resources. This is important because those persons are usually isolated from communities. Among mentally disabled persons of residential institution, very importantly, those who have skills of independent life should take advantage of community resources, which would strengthen such life and further improve the quality of life. The promoted use of community facilities would strengthen skills of independent life by mentally disabled persons. Therefore, the quality of life of those persons could be even better if they move from residential institution to a small residence like Group Home.
Here, whether living at such residence would be most beneficial to improving the quality of life of mentally disabled persons was investigated to find that mentally disabled persons of residential institution were having quality of life higher than those of origin family or Group Home. But it is difficult to conclude that mentally disabled persons should reside at residential institution to enjoy better quality of life, when several limits of this research are considered. This is because a critical factor affecting quality of life, or activities of daily living are most deficient on part of those residing at residential institution.
Since findings of this study are quite different from those of previous studies, it is needed to more clearly determine the very reason why mentally disabled residing at residential institution are higher in quality of life than those having the other residential styles. And subsequent studies should consider economic efficiency, an important factor that was ignored in the study.
