The purpose of this study had compared the practical rearing attitude and parenting stress of parents of children with and without disabilities. As the parenting stress of parents of children with and without disabilities. As the based on the comparative study, it identified characteristic relationships between the rearing attitude and the parenting stress of the parents. In addition, it explored the ways of parents's rearing attitude to decrease the parenting stress.
The subjects of this study were selected from the early educational institutions and mental retardation, emotional behavior disorder elementary schools in Taegu, Kyungbook, Seoul, Kyongki, Pusan, and Kyongnam. The subjects had autism, emotional behavior disorder, or mental retardation. The parents of children without disabilities participating in the study were attending preschools and elemental schools.
The questionnaire contained of three parts : comparative study of rearing attitude of parents of children with and without disabilities (partⅠ) and comparative study of parenting stress of parents of children with and without disabilities (part Ⅱ).
The results of the study were as follows :
First, in the comparative study of rearing attitude of parents of children with and without disabilities, there were significant differnce for the rearing with and without disabilities, there were significant difference for the rearing attitude between parents of children with and without disabilities. The parents of children with disabilities have more difficult rearing than without disabilities children's
Second, in the comparative study of parenting stress of parents of children with and without disabilities, there were significant difference for the parenting stress between parents of children with and without disabilities. The stress levels of the parents who had children with disabilities were higher than without disabilities children's
Third, regardless of the presence of the disabilities, there were high correlation between the rearing attitude and the parenting stress of the parents of children with and without disabilities. So, the hypothesis, which was as the rearing attitude were inappropriate, the parenting stress would be high, was supported by the study. In the future study, the rearing attitude decreasing parenting stress should be included in the parents role and parents educating programs.
