The current emphasis on specialization and multiplicity has called on teachers of mathematics to create new forms of teaching materials that could be utilized to develop students' mathematical skills and enhance mathematical creativity together with problem-solving abilities, two components of higher mathematical thinking faculty.
The purpose of the present study was, throuth observing and matking quilt patterns, to inspire students to experience mathematical elements in life and art, whicht by extension, would enable them to deal with mathematics more enthusiastically and study in more efficiently and autonomously.
The research was done in the following sequence.
First, an inverstigation of the role patterns play in teaching mathematics was made.
Second, an analysis of various mathematical elements found in quilt patterns was made after reviewing the book 'Mathematical Quilts'.
Third, quilt patterns were made in class by elementary-school students with the goal of increasing their creativity.
The value of the study is that, via making quilt patterens, students were provided with opportunities to change their stereotyped view of mathematics as the subject that required simplistic calculation and application of memorized formulae, enjoy newfound interest and self-confidence in dolving mathematical questions, and experience beauty in mathematical terms.
