상담전문가 발달과정에서의 좌절극복경험 분석 = Analysis on the Experiences of Overcoming Frustration in Developmental Process of Professional Counselors

The purpose of this study was to generate a substantial theory defining and explaining the experiences of Korean professional counselors' overcoming frustration in their counselor developmental process. This study was executed by applying the grounded theory method based on Strauss and Corbin(1998). For this purpose, the researcher sampled 8 professional counselors among the supervisor-level counselors with 15 years or longer counseling career and 10 years or longer supervision career, enrolled at one or more of 4 counseling associations in Korea, Korean Counseling Psychological Association(KCPA), The Korea Counseling Association(KCA), Korean Association of Christian Counseling & Psychotherapy(KACCP), The Korean Association of Pastoral Counselors(KAPC). The data collected through in-depth interview were qualitatively analyzed based on the Strauss and Corbin's (1998) ground theory approach. As a result of analysis, a paradigm model and the stage of overcoming frustration in the professional counselor's development process were deducted. Core caegory of this study would be the concept ‘dialectical self-expansion’ that generated ‘new self’(synthesis) from the conflict between ‘established self’(thesis) and ‘frustrated self’ by difficulties in counselor developmental process (anti-thesis). In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that counselors' experience of frustration would be “an optimal frustration”(Kohut, 2005) for counselor development, if they should not avoid it but face it.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 발달 후기에 이른 상담전문가들을 대상으로 그들이 발달과정에서 겪은 좌절과 극복경험들을 심층 면담으로 탐색함으로써 상담전문가의 좌절극복경험의 구조와 과정을 밝히고 그에 따른 실체이론을 개발하는 것이다. 이를 위해 국내 4개 상담학회의 수퍼바이저급 전문가들 중, 상담경력 15년 이상, 수퍼비젼 경력 10년 이상으로서 현재 상담을 지속적으로 실시하고 있는 상담전문가 8명을 이론적 표출하였고, 심층면담을 통해 수집된 자료를 Strauss와 Corbin(1998)의 근거이론 방법을 적용하여 질적분석하였다. 분석결과, 상담전문가들은 전 생애 발달과정에서 다양한 좌절을 경험하고 있었으며, 좌절로 인한 부정적인 정서와 함께 좌절상황을 피하려고만 하지 않고 애써 대면하려는 의지가 동시에 좌절의 양축을 이루는 현상을 나타내고 있었다. 상담전문가들의 좌절에서 극복으로 가는 심리적 내면과정에는 좌절을 일으키는 어려움에 대해 수용, 도전, 의미부여하려는 태도가 존재했고, 이는 좌절을 자기성장의 기회로 역전시키는 탄력성의 발현과정을 촉진시키고 있었다. 상담전문가들은 발달과정에서의 좌절을 극복한 결과, 인간과 세상에 대한 관점의 변화와 함께 자기와 타자에 대한 인간이해와 수용력의 확장이 일어나는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 이들은 좌절상황에 대한 대처 유연성과 지혜를 획득하였고, 상담자로서의 전문적인 태도와 접근방식의 변화가 일어남으로써 상담전문가로서의 발달이 촉진되는 것으로 나타났다.
