부모의 비정신화가 자녀와의 관계 및 자녀의 성격 형성에 미치는 영향 = The Qualitative Study of Non-Mentalization of Parents and the Personality Development of their Adult Children: Focused on the Experiences of Middle-Aged Women

The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the negative parenting behavior on the relationship with their children and their personality development in the period of childhood and adolescence through the qualitative research. Especially we analyzed this study focused on the parents` non-mentalization which has been issued recently for the fundamental psychological mechanism of parent-child attachment relationship. For this purpose, we collected the qualitative data from 10 adult women participants who had experienced negative parenting behaviors in their period of childhood and adolescence. They had an in-depth interview about the images of their parents, the interaction with their parents and the participants` individual personality. We analyzed the data with CQR (consensual qualitative research). The main results of this study are as follows. First, the main influence factors on non-mentalization of parents were the poor parenting environment in early childhood of participants and their parents` personality and health problem. Second, the characteristics of the interaction of non-mentalization parents with their children were the lack of communication and expression, apathy, abuse, non-intervention, no interest of knowing their children`s emotion and feeling and severe couple conflict. Participants who had these experienced not only became to have anxiety, fear, disappointment and resentment but also coped with these situations passively in non-self expression, intimacy problem to parents, no resistance and self -sacrifice. Third, due to non mentalization of parents, their children had negative influence on their personality development. In the emotional aspect, they had anxiety, fear, disappointment, resentment, and repression. In their interpersonal respect, they had lack of expression and rejection others. In their self-system respect, they had self-depreciation. We also discussed the limitation and implication of this research based on these results.
