이사와 전학이 학업성취도에 미치는 영향 = Consequences of residential and school mobility for academic achievement

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국의 많은 연구들이 외부환경의 급격한 변화를 가져오는 이사와 전학이 아동성장에 부정적 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여주었다. 본고에서는 이러한 문제의식에 기반하여 한국사회에서 학업성취도에 미치는 이사와 전학의 영향을 고찰한다. 서울아동패널 1-3차 자료를 활용하여 4-5학년 시기 이사와 전학이 5학년과 6학년 수학 및 국어성적에 미치는 영향과 5-6학년 시기 이사와 전학이 6학년 수학 및 국어성적에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 보다 강건한 결론을 도출하기 위하여 일반최소자승법, 절단회귀분석법, 매칭 등의 통계적 기법을 활용하였다. 분석 결과 4-5학년 시기 전학이 5학년 수학성적에 그리고 5-6학년 시기 전학이 6학년 수학성적에 통계적으로 유의미한 수준에서 부정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 4-5학년 시기 전학은 6학년 시기 수학성적에 부정적인 영향을 주었지만 통계적으로 유의미하지는 않았다. 국어성적은 이사나 전학에 의해 영향을 받지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결론과 관련된 정책적 함의를 제시하였고 사회적 관심을 환기시켰다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Studies in the U.S. have established the fact that residential and school mobility are harmful for diverse domains of child development because they bring about drastic changes in external environments. Based on this finding, we examine effects of residential and school mobility on the growth of math and Korean test scores. More specifically, we take a close look at relationship between residential and school mobility during 4th through 6th grade and academic achievement at 5th and 6th grade. For a rigorous study, we use several statistical methods including ordinary least squares, truncated regression, and a matching method. We detect negative effects of school mobility during 4th through 5th grade on math test scores at 5th grade and negative effects of school mobility during 5th through 6th grade on math test scores at 6th grade. School mobility during 4th through 5th grade appears to exert negative influence on math test scores at 6th grade though the effects are not statistically significant. We fail to find any negative impacts of residential or school mobility on Korean test scores.
