선교사 자녀들(MK)의 적응 경험에 대한 질적 연구: 귀국 대학생 중심으로 = Exploration of Returned MK College Students’ Experience of Adjusting to the Korean Culture

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article explores the unique and complex experiences of missionary kids who have returned for college education. The qualitative study was utilized to collect the data of the participants’ experiences through semi–structured interviews. six participants were interviewed from H university, which is known to have the biggest number of missionary kids in the student body. The analysis of the collected data involved with the descriptive and interpretive coding and thematic content analysis. The results of the study reveal some themes of the participants’ experiences including 1) their struggle with the delayed identity formation process and psychological distress from the loss and grief they had, 2) their changing views about Korea and Koreans, 3) their ultimate sense of belonging to God and identity as God’s child, 4) changing views of God and spiritual maturity through the cultural influences, and 5) the closest community with other returned MK students as a safe environment. Investigating the conflicts and challenges of the returned MK college students, some suggestions were made for counselors, church leaders and educators for the population.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 성장기의 상당 기간을 해외에서 보내고 대학진학을 위하여 귀국한 선교사 자녀들의 한국사회 적응과정 경험을 고찰한 질적 연구이다. 연구 참여자들은 한국에서 가장 많은 선교사 자녀들이 진학하고 있는 H대학 학생들로서 해외에서 10년 내외로 거주한 여학생 6명이다. 본 연구는 사례연구로서 생애사적 연구방법을 활용하여 자료를 수집하였고 면담자료는 기술적이며 해석적인 코딩(descriptive and interpretive coding)을 활용하여 주제별 내용분석방법(thematic content analysis)을 통하여 분석하였다. 수집된 자료의 분석결과에 따르면, 참여자들은 귀국 후 적응과정에서 자아정체감의 혼란, 슬픔, 외로움, 상실감, 소속감의 부재 등과 같은 어려움들을 경험하였으며 동질집단에서 가장 큰 소속감을 느꼈다. 이들이 가졌던 한국인으로서의 자아의식은 귀국 후 한국사회를 넘어서 국제사회 속에서 찾는 경향으로 바뀌었고 궁극적인 소속감과 정체감의 기초는 신앙이었다. 참여자들의 하나님에 대한 이미지나 신앙성숙에 대한 개념은 부모의 영향과 해외에서 경험한 기독교 문화의 영향을 따라 변화되었으며 귀국 후에는 한국기독교 문화의 영향을 받았다. 끝으로 본 연구결과를 기초로 한 기독교 상담 및 심리치료적 적용이 제안되었다.
