상담의 전문직 정체성에 관한 질적 연구 = A Qualitative Study on the Professional Identity of Counseling

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구에서는 상담의 전문직 정체성에 대한 전문상담자들의 인식을 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 상담 전공 박사학위와 상담 관련 전문가 자격증을 소지하면서 최소 5년 이상의 상담 경력이 있는 12명의 전문상담자들을 대상으로 일대일 면접을 진행하였 고, 합의적 질적 연구 방법을 사용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 연구결과, 대부분의 참여 자들은 인접 조력분야 전문가들과 구별되는 상담자의 전문성이 공감적 이해와 촉진 적 의사소통기술을 통해 치료적 관계를 형성함으로써 내담자의 내적 변화와 성장을 이끌어내는 능력에 있으며, 또한 치료적 도구로서 자신을 성찰하고 성장시키려는 노 력에 있다고 믿고 있었다. 한편 그들은 비교적 건강한 사람들이 겪는 다양한 삶의 문 제를 해결하거나 그들이 정신적으로 성장할 수 있도록 돕는 데 상담자가 전문성을 발휘할 수 있음을 강조하였다. 참여자들은 상담의 전문성을 제고하기 위해서는 다양 하고 풍부한 상담경험을 통해 기본적인 상담수행 능력을 탄탄히 다지는 것이 무엇보 다 중요하다고 보았다. 연구결과를 토대로 상담자 교육과 후속연구에 대한 시사점을 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study qualitatively examined practicing counselors perceptions of the professional identity of counseling. Twelve professional counselors, who held a doctoral degree and an advanced-level certification in counseling and also had a minimum of five years of counseling experience, were individually interviewed and data were analyzed using the consensual qualitative research method. Most participants believed that professional counselors expertise, distinct from other helping professionals, lies in their ability to bring about client change and growth by establishing a therapeutic relationship through empathic understanding and facilitative communication skills, and their efforts to reflect on themselves as a therapeutic tool and seek for personal growth. They also claimed that professional counselors could work effectively with relatively normal people who struggle with problems in their lives or desire to achieve mental growth. Participants suggested counselor training strengthen trainees’ basic knowledge and skills in counseling by providing more opportunities to practice as a way of heightening their sense of professional identity. Based on the findings of this study, implications for counselor education and future research are discussed.
