        유니버설디자인 개념에 의거한 대학내 학생편의시설 평가 및 개선방향에 대한 연구 - 미국 텍사스주를 중심으로 -

        Student halls and their convenient facilities have been a focal point for various student activities at university campus. It has been for most of the student a place of unique memories and of attachment often associated with those good and bad school days. However, it is questionable whether these facilities are supportive and accessible for all of the students and other users including the handicapped. Therefore, based on the concept of UD(universal design) which was widely applied to U.S. institutions, this study intended to evaluate student hall facilities in U.S. and to provide an improvement direction for Korean UD application. For that purpose, four universities were selected for an in-depth analysis and 76 survey indices were utilized based on previous research. It was found that (1) design consideration without braille sign for VIP(visually impaired person) in student buildings can be differently approached with electronic devices; (2) the best demonstration of UD in student buildings can be seen in spacious flat pathway, easy access through ramp and wide entry area, necessary for people in wheel-chairs, but used by all, implying an increase of the ratio of public space; (3) one of the good UD features is an attractive physical environment rather than institutional appearance, in which they ultimately will support and completely adaptable at optimal levels by everyone; (4) consistent maintenance and management maximize the potential of UD principles and minimize physical limitations.

        Effects of Physical Living Environment on the Social Interaction and Perceived Sense of Community among Students in University Dormitory

        College students living in university dormitory continuously experience unique physical and social living conditions, being away from their hometown and loving families. Most college students has engaged in a very limited social activities in dormitory area. Studies have shown that sense of community(SOC) is closely related to students' social activities. However, few research have examined the relationship between physical environment and sense of community. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the effects of physical environment of dormitory on students' perceived sense of community and their social interaction. Extensive literature review found that developing social interaction and building a sense of student community improve students' overall residential satisfaction with dormitory and personal academic growth. Survey on A university dormitory and Chi square analysis (${\chi}^2$) indicated that each group's individual characteristics such as gender, grade, living period, and personality were statistically significant on the level of SOC at the level of p=.01. Individual analysis of SOC showed that sense of belonging was higher than shared emotional connection, which means certain level of intervention is needed. Pearson correlation analysis validated that there exists statistically significant relationship between physical environment and SOC. Further it also found that the most important predictor in facilitating social interaction were comfortable, quiet, and enough social space around the dormitory.

        뉴욕시 공립학교에 나타난 배치 특성에 관한 연구 - 맨하튼 가로체계와 외부공간의 관계를 중심으로 -

        The purpose of this study is to analyze patterns of public school building layout types, open space and relationship with communities in the Manhattan grid plan. The study illustrates how building layout patterns of school facilities are influenced by societal demands in the urban grid environment. During the nineteenth century, the Island of Manhattan was transformed into a physical representation of the Cartesian coordinate system via the development of the grid street plan. In order to take advantage of streets as urban space, it is quite important to understand characteristics of communities and open space relationships between buildings and streets. Moreover, the strategic planning of schools' outdoor space vitalizes public streets as a critical community anchor. This research reviews 118 Manhattan public schools and categorizes them by (1) building layout type, (2) site type, (3) circulation and public open space, which are the biggest factors that determine the layout patterns of the public schools in Manhattan. As a result of analysis, the layout patterns are classified into seven types : "ㅡ", "L", "ㄷ", "ㅁ", "H", "T" and "other" type. Of these, "ㅡ" type and "L" type occur most frequently, because these configurations most flexibly fit into the limited grid-locked blocks, the various types of site & topography, and adapt most dynamically to the open spaces created by using avenues and streets. The ultimate objective of this study is to provide a case study for future efforts to plan open spaces for campuses that effectively utilize the streets in proximity.

        Circuit Dynamics in a School Facility based on Home-base Area

        The latest educational curriculum in Korea started in 1997, and the 'Departmentalized Classroom System', which is a distinguishing modern concept compared with conventional pedagogy, has already been used in several high schools since 2009 and will be expanded to all middle school and high schools by 2014. However, most Korean schools are not yet physically ready to implement the new system. Moreover, despite many trials during the last three years, the characteristic and architectural function of a place called 'Home-base' is still vague and has caused many controversial arguments. In fact, a large number of home-base designs failed to accomplish their original task and there are counter evidences that shows reality was quite different over architect's personal and subjective radical plan. Therefore, this study seeks to introduce and objective scientific method based on an mathematical model of an optimized algorithm for planning a home-base area in a school design. The algorithm developed in this study is designed to determine the most efficient location for a home-base area to minimize the distance students typically need to walk.
