Information-and knowledge-based instruction in English class : 지식과 정보를 가르치는 영어수업

조선시대 한자를 공부하지 않고는 출세를 할 수 없었던 상황처럼, 이른바 생존경쟁의 일환으로 영어를 배우고, 가르치는 이 땅의 학생들과 영어교사들에게 우리가 영어를 공부하는 목적이 무엇인지를 화두로 던지고 싶다. 현재, 한국의 학생들은 초등학교 3학년부터 중학교, 고등학교, 그리고 대학교까지 대략 14년간 영어를 필수과목으로 배운다. 그러나 장기간의 영어교육에도 불구하고 대부분의 학생들은 대학을 졸업한 이후에도 원활한 영어 구사에 어려움을 느끼고 있다. 그 결과 많은 학생들이 값비싼 해외 어학연수 비용을 감당하면서 영어를 배우고 있는 실정이다. 그러나 우리가 이렇게 까지 적잖은 비용과 시간을 감수하면서 얻는 결과 역시도 뿌듯하게 만족할 수 있는 정도는 아니라고 판단된다. 또한, 대다수의 중학교, 고등학교 학생들이 학교에서 사용되는 영어 교과서에 대해 흥미를 느끼지 못함을 조사를 통해 알 수 있었다. 영어를 단지 시험 점수에 기준한 부담스런 학습 과목으로 여기는 경우가 많았다. 이러한 상황에 비추어, Information- and Knowledge-Based Instruction (IKBI), 즉 학생들에게 영어로 정보와 지식을 가르치는 영어수업을 이 논문에서 제시해 본다. 중학교, 고등학교 학생들은 가능한 한 풍부한 지식과 정보를 통해 인지능력, 사고능력, 창의력, 판단력 등을 함양하고 성장시켜가야 하는 중요한 시기이다. 더불어 세계는 지식과 정보의 홍수 속에 더 많은 자질을 갖춘 인재들을 요구하고 있다. 이러한 여건을 고려할 때, 시대에 뒤떨어진 의미 없는 영어 교재보다는 지식과 정보, 그리고 지혜를 더해 줄 수 있는 교재 내용을 영어수업에 도입하는 것이 바람직하다고 생각한다. 학생들의 흥미나 관심, 필요 욕구를 감안하여 실생활과 밀접한 시사적, 교양적인 내용, 그리고 그들의 취미나 호기심을 유발하는 분야들을 영어수업에 적절히 적용한다면, 깊이 있고 의미 있는 영어교육이 이루어질 것으로 기대된다. 많은 실제 자료들이 교사의 책임 어린 손길에 의해 실용적이고 가치 있는 영어 교재로 이용되어질 수 있다. 영자 신문 기사들, 영자 잡지 기사들, 그리고 수많은 기초 지식을 담고 있는 영어 백과사전(특히 어린이용 백과사전)은 풍부한 지식과 정보의 보고이다. 이러한 자료들의 사용으로 학생들의 호기심과 흥미를 자극하고, 나아가 자발적인 학습동기를 부여해 줄 수 있다면, 결과적으로, 보다 자연스러운 영어 습득이 가능하다고 믿는다. 학생들의 흥미와 관심, 필요 욕구에 기초한 좋은 자료의 선별과 수집, 그리고 학생들의 수준에 합당한 편집과정과 수업계획, 그에 따른 다양한 수업활동 등은 영어교사에게 있어 시간과 경비, 그리고 노력 면에서 많은 요구와 부담을 더할 것이다. 그러나 교사는 지식을 환원하는 봉사자로 서의 책임을 안고 있다. 바람직한 영어수업의 모색은 곧 세계의 경쟁대열에 합류하게 될 미래의 주역들을 위함이다. IKBI 방식이 영어수업의 질을 향상시켜 효과적인 영어교육이 이 땅에서 이루어지기를 희망한다. Success in the Yi Dynasty was impossible without studying Chinese letters, similarly, we are teaching and studying English, as a part of, what is called, "a struggle for survival". At this point, I would like to ask what is ultimate purpose of studying English to the students and English teachers in Korea. Korean students have taken compulsory English programs for approximately 14 years beginning in the third grade of elementary school, throughout middle school, high school, and to college and/or university. Despite a long-term English education, most people, however, can't be satisfied with their English competence. As a result, a great number of students study abroad and spend too much money and time learning the English language. Unfortunately, the results are also said not to be satisfactory. According to my latest research, almost all middle school and high school students have no interest in the English textbooks being used In schools. In many cases, students feel the burden of studying English as If only for the purpose of getting good test scores. In light of these current circumstances, I would like to suggest that Information- and Knowledge-Based Instruction (IKBI), my idea based on Content-Based Instruction, be employed in English classes. Through this approach, Korean students will acquire a variety of information and knowledge of the real world as well as the target language. During such an important period, students should cultivate and develop their cognitive powers, their mental faculties, creative powers, and good judgment, by encountering as much information and gaining as much knowledge as possible. Furthermore, the Information Age needs more capable experts and professionals. In view of this, materials should be introduced which enable the students to explore a wealth of knowledge, information, and wisdom, instead of the outdated and standardized textbook. Based on students'interests, concerns and needs, the current issues of the real world, and the areas stimulating their curiosity should be adopted in order to make English education substantial and meaningful. Many genuine materials can be appropriately utilized as practical and desirable teaching ones by English teachers'devoted efforts. Diverse articles in newspapers, magazines and encyclopedias, especially, children's encyclopedias have inexhaustible potential as interesting material for a contextualized class. Teachers will spend much time and money as well as a great effort sorting and choosing useful articles in proportion to the students' interests and needs. Teachers will also have to edit and arrange the materials according to the students'proficiency level, and plan a wide variety of activities. In their primary role, as free flowing fountains of knowledge, teachers are responsible for transferring their own knowledge to their students, thus producing a generation of quality students. Producing desirable English education is necessary for the sake of our future leaders who will soon enter an exacting world arena. Hopefully, IKBI will be able to improve the pedagogical quality of Korean schools, so as to establish an effective and effcient English educational system in Korea.
