Therapeutic Aspects of Arts Education for Highschool Students with Delinquency

The purpose of this study is to examine the essence of the arts learning experience through developed program with focus on the therapeutic aspect arts education. A total of 65 students from grade 10 to 12 who were residing in delinquency highschool participated. The arts education program was administered for 14 weeks. Open self-inquiry questionnaire was used to examine participants’ experience of art learning program, and the responses were content analyzed. The results showed that 89.2% of the participants reported positive experience, including improved self-esteem, affect modification, meaningful learning opportunity, and interpersonal relationships. Secondly, 4.6% reported that they were ambivalent about the program and lastly, 6.1% of the participants reported negative experience stating that the program was boring and meaningless. The results indicated that the arts education program has brought changes in students’ perspective of their potentials and social relationships.

The purpose of this paper is to argue for the crucial link between principal leadership and improvement of the quality of education, based on a case study of two secondary schools. This case study shows how two successful principals create conditions for transforming the principalship into a powerful force for educational reform in Korea and Japan. The principals make student learning a priority, playing a vital role in setting the direction for the schools and in providing a basis for transforming the schools. Japanese principal focuses much time on teacher learning by providing conditions to observe student learning, while Korean principal tries to communicate teachers to reach a consensus in oder to have ownership of their work. The study shows that principal leadership is essential in ensuring educational aims or sharing a vision, and implementing the changes of school practices such as curriculum, instruction, teaching methods in the school-site. The principals improve the quality of education through their outstanding leadership.
