Vol.3 No.-

That the New Criticism was "ahistorical" in its theory and practice has become a commonplace, but it would be more accurate to say that the New Critics accepted and worked within the view of history held by most of the literary historians of their time. Douglas Bush accused the new critics of being ignorant of and indifferent to the circumstantial evidence that makes literary works cultural as well as verbal artifacts. Hugh Kenner Characterized the new criticism as a mere classroom's strategy that pays insufficient attention to "peripheral information." However, the very terms of these attacks rested on certain premises that left unexamined. Those who are familiar with Brooks's work, and not just with the cartoon images promulgated by his detractors, know that he is a conscientious and genuinely learned scholar. Whenever he engaged historical scholars in debate, it was for the purpose of showing them how much they needed each other and how much literature needed them both. He argued that without the foundation of scholarship, criticism could never be more than subjective speculation. In his Historical Evidence and the Reading of Seventeenth-Century Poetry, Brooks returned to a topic that had interested himself since his days as a graduate student. It is the topic about the relationship between historical evidence and literary criticism, expressed in literature and academy. Brooks must have felt that old historians and new critics had better things to do than refight ancient wars with each other. This thesis reveals that, although Brooks's practical criticism was not itself a historical text, its treatment of works from various periods implied a radically revised history of English poetry.
