<▼1><B>Abstract</B><P/></▼1><▼2><P>We demonstrate here the design, synthesis and characterization of two new chlorinated polymers, P(NDI2HD-T2Cl2) and P(NDI2OD-T2Cl2) based on <I>N,N</I>′-difunctionalized naphthalene diimide (NDI) and 3,3′-dichloro-2,2′-bithiophene (T2Cl2) moieties. Our results indicate that organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) based on these new chlorinated polymers exhibit electron mobilities approaching 0.1 cm<SUP>2</SUP>V<SUP>−1</SUP>s<SUP>−1</SUP> (<I>I</I>on:<I>I</I>off ~ 10<SUP>6</SUP>-10<SUP>7</SUP>), with far less ambipolarity due to their lower highest occupied molecular orbital energies, and they are more stable under deleterious high-humidity conditions (RH ~ 60%) and upon submersion in water, compared with those fabricated with the parent non-chlorinated polymers. In addition, OTFTs fabricated with the new chlorinated polymers exhibit excellent operational stabilities with <3% degradations upon bias-stress test.</P></▼2>
Design and Characterization of a Flextensional Stage Based on Terfenol-D Actuator

A machine for microforming was designed and built around a custom low-frequency, high-power Terfenol-D transducer coupled to a flextensional type lever system for displacement amplification. Separate bolt-on flexure joints were used instead of a traditional monolithic flextensional lever system design in order to reduce cost. A mathematical model of the transducer and lever system was created that matches blocked force with an 11% error and maximum displacement with a 2% error. Thermal response and hysteresis vs. frequency response were also tested. Using an 18 mm diameter 200 mm long Terfenol-D rod and a lever ratio of 10, the system is capable of up to 365 N of force and 1.6 mm of displacement with resolution of less than 1 µm.

The present study developed an oral hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene therapy strategy for gastric ulcers treatment. An attenuated Salmonella typhimurium that stably expressed high HGF (named as TPH) was constructed, and the antiulcerogenic effect of TPH was evaluated in a rat model of gastric ulcers that created by acetic acid subserosal injection. From day 5 after injection, TPH (1 × 109 cfu), vehicle (TP, 1 × 109 cfu), or sodium bicarbonate (model control) was administered orally every alternate day for three times. Then ulcer size was measured at day 21 after ulcer induction. The ulcer area in TPH-treated group was 10.56 ± 3.30 mm2, which was smaller when compared with those in the TP-treated and model control groups (43.47 ± 4.18 and 56.25 ± 6.38 mm2, respectively). A higher level of reepithelialization was found in TPH-treated group and the crawling length of gastric epithelial cells was significantly longer than in the other two groups (P < 0.05). The microvessel density in the ulcer granulation tissues of the TPH-treated rats was 39.9 vessels/mm2, which was greater than in the TP-treated and model control rats, with a significant statistical difference. <P>We report the fabrication of high-performance, printed, <I>n</I>-channel organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) based on an <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>-dialkyl-substituted-(1,7&1,6)-dicyanoperylene-3,4:9,10-bis(dicarboximide) derivative, PDI-RCN2, optimized by the solvent-vapor annealing (SVA) process. We performed a systematic study on the influence of solubility and the chemical structure of a solvent used for the SVA process on the ordering and orientation of PDI-RCN2 molecules in the thin film. The PDI-RCN2 film showed improved crystallinity under vapor annealing with the aliphatic 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) as a marginal solvent. The <I>n</I>-type OFETs with DCE-vapor-annealed PDI-RCN2 show highly improved charge-carrier mobility of ∼0.5 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>–1</SUP> s<SUP>–1</SUP> and higher stability under gate bias stress than the pristine OFETs. This large performance improvement was mainly attributed to increased crystallinity of the semiconductor thin film, enhancing π–π stacking. We also introduced a new method to pattern crystallinity of a certain region in the semiconducting film by selective exposure to the solvent vapor using a shadow mask. <P>A recent genome-wide association study (GWAS) of subjects from Japan and South Korea reported a novel association between the TP63 locus on chromosome 3q28 and risk of lung adenocarcinoma (p = 7.3 10(-12)); however, this association did not achieve genome-wide significance (p 10(-7)) among never-smoking males or females. To determine if this association with lung cancer risk is independent of tobacco use, we genotyped the TP63 SNPs reported by the previous GWAS (rs10937405 and rs4488809) in 3,467 never-smoking female lung cancer cases and 3,787 never-smoking female controls from 10 studies conducted in Taiwan, Mainland China, South Korea, and Singapore. Genetic variation in rs10937405 was associated with risk of lung adenocarcinoma [n = 2,529 cases; p = 7.1 10(-8); allelic risk = 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.74-0.87]. There was also evidence of association with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung (n = 302 cases; p = 0.037; allelic risk = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.67-0.99). Our findings provide strong evidence that genetic variation in TP63 is associated with the risk of lung adenocarcinoma among Asian females in the absence of tobacco smoking.</P>
