• Between Local and Global: The Implementation of International Education in a Taiwanese Preschool

Yvonne Yu-Feng Liu,Su-Hui Chou 환태평양유아교육연구학회 2017 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhoo Vol.11 No.3

This research aims to explore how international education can be better practiced in the Taiwanese preschool context where there appears a myth for the push of "being global." Collaborative action research was conducted and data was collected from one preschool in Taiwan, which included teaching observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers. Three findings are as follows. First, strategies in the implementation of international education were creating new and genuine foreign contact with flexible design. Second, with the foreign contact experience, children have newfound and brighter cultural vision which trigger children's cultural thinking. Third, children gradually change their cultural bias by simply labelling culture as either Taiwan or foreign without discrimination.

DNA demethylation is initiated in the central cells of Arabidopsis and rice

        Park, Kyunghyuk,Kim, M. Yvonne,Vickers, Martin,Park, Jin-Sup,Hyun, Youbong,Okamoto, Takashi,Zilberman, Daniel,Fischer, Robert L.,Feng, Xiaoqi,Choi, Yeonhee,Scholten, Stefan National Academy of Sciences 2016 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Vol.113 No.52

Cytosine methylation is a DNA modification with important regulatory functions in eukaryotes. In flowering plants, sexual reproduction is accompanied by extensive DNA demethylation, which is required for proper gene expression in the endosperm, a nutritive extraembryonic seed tissue. Endosperm arises from a fusion of a sperm cell carried in the pollen and a female central cell. Endosperm DNA demethylation is observed specifically on the chromosomes inherited from the central cell in Arabidopsis thaliana, rice, and maize, and requires the DEMETER DNA demethylase in Arabidopsis. DEMETER is expressed in the central cell before fertilization, suggesting that endosperm demethylation patterns are inherited from the central cell. Down-regulation of the MET1 DNA methyltransferase has also been proposed to contribute to central cell demethylation. However, with the exception of three maize genes, central cell DNA methylation has not been directly measured, leaving the origin and mechanism of endosperm demethylation uncertain. Here, we report genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation in the central cells of Arabidopsis and rice-species that diverged 150 million years agoas well as in rice egg cells. We find that DNA demethylation in both species is initiated in central cells, which requires DEMETER in Arabidopsis. However, we do not observe a global reduction of CG methylation that would be indicative of lowered MET1 activity; on the contrary, CG methylation efficiency is elevated in female gametes compared with nonsexual tissues. Our results demonstrate that locus-specific, active DNA demethylation in the central cell is the origin of maternal chromosome hypomethylation in the endosperm.

Antenatal Thyroid Function Does Not Increase Risk of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus in a Multi-Ethnic Pregnancy Cohort

        Christopher Alan Muir,Ashish Munsif,Kenrick Blaker,Yvonne Feng,Mario D’Souza,Shailja Tewari 대한갑상선학회 2020 International Journal of Thyroidology Vol.13 No.1

Background and Objectives: Subclinical hypothyroidism in pregnancy has been inconsistently associated with an increased risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively examined whether an antenatal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level ≥2.5 mIU/L was associated with increased risk of GDM in 1147 pregnant women residing in a multi-ethnic suburban area of Sydney, Australia. Results: Despite a high prevalence of GDM and hypothyroidism in our study, women with antenatal TSH concentrations ≥2.5 mIU/L were not at increased risk for development of gestational diabetes. Traditional risk factors for GDM, such as maternal body mass index, ethnicity, previous GDM pregnancy and family history of type 2 diabetes were significant predictors of incident GDM on multivariable analyses. Conclusion: Mild elevations in antenatal TSH concentration did not significantly increase risk of incident GDM compared to healthy euthyroid women.
