        Regional Distribution of Interstitial Cells of Cajal, (ICC) in Human Stomach

        We elucidated the distribution of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) in human stomach, using cryosection and $c-Kit$ immunohistochemistry to identify $c-Kit$ positive ICC. Before $c-Kit$ staining, we routinely used hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining to identify every structure of human stomach, from mucosa to longitudinal muscle. HE staining revealed that the fundus greater curvature (GC) had prominent oblique muscle layer, and $c-Kit$ immunostaining $c-Kit$ positive ICC cells were found to have typical morphology of dense fusiform cell body with multiple processes protruding from the central cell body. In particular, we could observe dense processes and ramifications of ICC in myenteric area and longitudinal muscle layer of corpus GC. Interestingly, $c-Kit$ positive ICC-like cells which had morphology very similar to ICC were found in gastric mucosa. We could not find any significant difference in the distribution of ICC between fundus and corpus, except for submucosa where the density of ICC was much higher in gastric fundus than corpus. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in the density of ICC between each area of fundus and corpus, except for muscularis mucosa. Finally, we also found similar distribution of ICC in normal and cancerous tissue obtained from a patient who underwent pancreotomy and gastrectomy. In conclusion, ICC was found ubiquitously in human stomach and the density of ICC was significantly lower in the muscularis mucosa of both fundus/corpus and higher in the submucosa of gastric fundus than corpus.

      • Strength and permeability of fiber-reinforced concrete incorporating waste materials

        Ecological issues such as natural resource reduction and enormous waste disposals are increasingly leading in developing civilization toward sustainable construction. The two primary environmental issues are the depletion of natural resources and the disposal of trash in open landfills. Waste steel fiber (WSF) was investigated for usage as a cement-based concrete (CBC) constituent in this research. Recycling waste fibers both makes cement composites more long and cost-effective, also aids in pollution reduction. The objective of this study is to analyze the impacts of waste fiber on the fresh and mechanical features of concrete using recycled additives. A comparative research on the durability and mechanical qualities of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) constructed with natural aggregates was conducted for this aim. The obstacles to successful WSF recycling methods application in the building industry have been investigated, resulting that CBCs with these fibers make an economic and long lasting choice to deal with waste materials. The workability of fiber enhanced concrete was found to be comparable to that of normal concrete. Fibers have a considerable impact on the splitting tensile strength, flexural and compressive strength of recycled concrete. Fiber may enhance the water permeability. When the WSF content is 0.6 kg/m3, the water absorption is nearly half. Fibers would have no effect on its permeability.

        Recent progresses in marine microbial-derived antiviral natural products

        Viruses have always been a class of pathogenicmicroorganisms that threaten the health and safety of humanlife worldwide. However, for a long time, the treatment ofviral infections has been slow to develop, and only a fewantiviral drugs have been using clinically. Compared withthese from terrestrial environments, marine-derived microorganismscan produce active substances with more novelstructures and unique functions. From 2015 to 2019, 89antiviral compounds of 8 structural classes have been isolatedfrom marine microorganisms, of which 35 exhibit anti-H1N1 activity. This review surveys systematically marinemicrobial-derived natural products with antiviral activityand illustrates the impact of these compounds on antiviraldrug discovery research.

        Aerodynamic stability analysis of geometrically nonlinear orthotropic membrane structure with hyperbolic paraboloid in sag direction

        This paper studies the aerodynamic stability of a tensioned, geometrically nonlinear orthotropic membrane structure with hyperbolic paraboloid in sag direction. Considering flow separation, the wind field around membrane structure is simulated as the superposition of a uniform flow and a continuous vortex layer. By the potential flow theory in fluid mechanics and the thin airfoil theory in aerodynamics, aerodynamic pressure acting on membrane surface can be determined. And based on the large amplitude theory of membrane and D'Alembert's principle, interaction governing equations of wind-structure are established. Then, under the circumstance of single-mode response, the Bubnov-Galerkin approximate method is applied to transform the complicated interaction governing equations into a system of second-order nonlinear differential equation with constant coefficients. Through judging the frequency characteristic of the system characteristic equation, the critical velocity of divergence instability is determined. Different parameter analysis shows that the orthotropy, geometrical nonlinearity and scantling of structure is significant for preventing destructive aerodynamic instability in membrane structures. Compared to the model without considering flow separation, it's basically consistent about the divergence instability regularities in the flow separation model.

        Background: The clinical manifestations of primary biliary cirrhosis are diverse and complex. The clinical manifestations of different clinical period are different. There are certain limitations to the role of the clinical diagnosis and treatment by previous pathological stage. Our objective is to investigate the c1inical staging for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). Methods: Ninety six patients diagnosed of PBC in three periods (1995-1998 13 cases, 1999-2002 11 cases, 2003-2007 66 cases) were enrolled and their clinical manifestation and biochemica1 indicators were observed. The liver biopsy and therapeutic effects were evaluated. Results: The early diagnostic rate had increased in recent years. Since 2003, 19 asymptomatic (4 with porta1 hypertention and 7 with splenohepatomegalia) and 2 early presymptomatic cases were diagnosed. There was no statistical difference in pruritus, lipoid granuloma, osteopathis, and night-blindness between symptomatic and decompensated patients (p > 0.05), while there was significant difference in lethargy, jaundice, portal hypertension, ascites, splenohepatomegalia and the incidence of other immune diseases between two groups (p<0.05). There was significant difference in levels of a1kaline phosphatase and IgM among patients in three periods. The levels of GGT were 36.75± 1.77, 303.71±82.15, 513.68±289.85 of u/L in presymptomatic, asymptomatic and symptomatic stage, respectively (p < 0.01). The patients in asymptomatic and symptomatic stage had histological changes of any pathologic stage. Ursodeoxycholic acid treatment could improve biochemical indicator of asymptomatic patients. The outcome of patients received treatment in asymptomatic stage was better than those in symptomatic stage. Conclusions: The clinical staging may result of early diagnosis of PBC and the early treatment will be more effective.

        OsCML4 improves drought tolerance through scavenging of reactive oxygen species in rice

        Calmodulin-like (CML) genes function in regulating plant responses to different abiotic stresses, such as high salt and drought. Using japonica type rice seedlings (‘Nipponbare’), we induced the expression of OsCML4 (Accession No. NM_001057768), which encodes a rice CML protein. Under drought conditions, transgenic plants over-expressing that gene exhibited obviously improved growth performance and higher survival rates than the wild type (WT). Activity by reactive oxygen species (ROS)- scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as proline concentrations, were significantly increased in transgenic plants. Expression by ROS scavenging-related genes APXI and Cat-B and the stress-related gene OsP5CS1 was also enhanced in the transgenics under drought conditions. However, the sensitivity to abscisic acid (ABA) was similar between over-expressing and WT plants. These results suggest that OsCML4 confers drought tolerance partially through ROS-scavenging and also by inducing other stress-related genes in an ABAindependent manner.

      • Identification of Serum MicroRNA-21 as a Biomarker for Early Detection and Prognosis in Human Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

        Recent investigations have confirmed up-regulation of serum miR-21 and its diagnostic and prognostic value in several human malignancies. In this study, we examined serum miR-21 levels in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) patients, and explored its association with clinicopathological factors and prognosis. The results showed significantly higher serum miR-21 levels in EOC patients than in healthy controls. In addition, increased serum miR-21 expression was correlated with advanced FIGO stage, high tumor grade, and shortened overall survival. These findings indicate that serum miR-21 may serve as a novel diagnostic and prognostic marker, and be used as a therapeutic target for the treatment of EOC.
