Development and Cyclic Behavior of U-Shaped Steel Dampers with Perforated and Nonparallel Arm Confi gurations

        Kurtulus Atasever,Oguz C. Celik,Ercan Yuksel 한국강구조학회 2018 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.18 No.5

Metallic dampers are sacrifi cial devices (fuses) that dissipate signifi cant energy during earthquakes while protecting other parts of structures from possible damage. In addition to numerous implementation opportunities of other base isolation systems, U-shaped dampers (UD) are one of the widely investigated and used devices in practice especially in Japan. The present study focuses on enhancing seismic performance of these types of dampers by changing their geometric properties. UDs with perforated (i.e. with holes) and/or nonparallel arms are developed for this purpose. For a better comparison, the criterion of equal material volume (or mass) has been utilized. Three dimensional fi nite element models of the new type of UDs are formed and investigated numerically under selected displacement histories. Based on the obtained hysteretic curves; dissipated energy intensities, eff ective stiff ness ratios, reaction forces, eff ective damping ratios are evaluated in this parametric study. It is found that both damper types have merits in use of seismic applications and that the selection of the damper confi guration is dependent on the design specifi c issues.

Approximate and Three-Dimensional Modeling of Brightness Levels in Interior Spaces by Using Artificial Neural Networks

Sahin, Mustafa,Oguz, Yuksel,Buyuktumturk, Fuat The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2015 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.10 No.4

In this study, artificial neural networks were used to determine the intensity of brightness in interior spaces. The illumination elements to illuminate indoor spaces were considered, not individually, but as a system. So, during the planned maintenance periods of an illumination system, after its design and installation, simple brightness level measurements must be taken. For a three-dimensional evaluation of the brightness level in indoor spaces in a speedy and accurate manner, the obtained brightness level measurement results and artificial neural network model were used. Upon estimation of the most suitable brightness level for indoor spaces by using the artificial neutral network model, the energy demands required by the illumination elements decreased. Consequently, in this study, with estimations of brightness levels, the extent to which the artificial neutral networks become successful was observed and more correct results have been obtained in terms of both economy and usage.

Novel active and passive balancing method‑based battery management system design and implementation

        Sinan Kivrak,Tolga Ozer,Yuksel Oguz,Muhammed Mustafa Kelek 전력전자학회 2021 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.21 No.12

In this study, a novel battery management system (BMS) circuit topology based on passive and active balancing methods was created and implemented for battery-based systems. The circuit topology was designed so that both of the control methods can be applied when suitable software is used. A resistance-based passive control method was used. MOSFET switching elements were used as a load instead of a resistance. A bypass technique-based active balancing method was applied to the designed BMS. The applicability of these methods was separately tested as passive and active-based experimental systems. During the charging process, a voltage increase of the cells was observed at approximately 0.140 V after 16 min in the passive balancing mode. On the other hand, the voltage increase was measured at 0.155 V after 14 min in the active balancing mode. The average temperature of the cells in charge states was measured as approximately 25 °C. The obtained experimental results verified that the proposed BMS topology can work successfully in both active and passive balancing operations. As a result of this study, active and passive balancing circuit structures were combined, and a new circuit topology has been introduced.

      • Trastuzumab-based Retreatment after Lapatinib in Heavily Pretreated HER2 Positive Metastatic Breast Cancer: an Anatolian Society of Medical Oncology Study

        Uncu, Dogan,Bayoglu, Ibrahim Vedat,Arslan, Ulku Yalcintas,Kucukoner, Mehmet,Artac, Mehmet,Koca, Dogan,Oguz, Arzu,Demirci, Umut,Arpaci, Erkan,Dogan, Mutlu,Kucukzeybek, Yuksel,Turker, Ibrahim,Isikdogan, Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.9

Background: For HER2 positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC), continuing anti-HER2 therapy beyond progression is associated with improved outcome. However retreatment with trastuzumab after lapatinib progression is controversial. We retrospectively analyzed the efficacy of trastuzumab-based chemotherapy in HER2+ metastatic breast cancer patients whose disease progressed after lapatinib. Materials and Methods: Between October 2010 and May 2013, 54 patients whose disease progressed after lapatinib were retreated with trastuzumab-based chemotherapy. Efficacy and toxicity results were evaluated retrospectively. Results: The median age of patients was 46 (range 27-67). Fourteen patients (26%) had metastases at the time of diagnosis. All of the patients had received trastuzumab in an adjuvant or metastatic setting, while 16 (30%) had received two lines of trastuzumab. All patients had received lapatinib plus capecitabine. The median chemotherapy line for the metastatic setting was 2 (range 1-7). Cranial metastases were identified in 27 (50%) patients. 53 patients received trastuzumab-based chemotherapy following lapatinib progression while one patient received trastuzumab monotherapy. Combination chemotherapy consisted of navelbin (n=33), taxane (n=10), gemcitabine (n=2), platinum (n=2) and platinum with taxane (n=6). The median treatment cycle was 5 (range 1-44). Among 49 patients assessed for response 2 (4%) showed CR, 12 (25%) PR, 11 (22%) SD and 24 (49%) disease progression. Asymptomatic cardiotoxicity was reported in 2 (4%) of the patients. At a median follow-up of 9 months (1-39), median progression-free survival was 5 months (95% CI 4.1-5.9) and median overall survival was 10 months (95% CI 6.9-13.0). PFS and OS were not affected by the absence/presence of cranial metastases. Conclusions: Retreatment with trastuzumab-based therapy after lapatinib progression showed efficacy in heavily treated MBC patients.
