Laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy (DN) has been established as a useful alternative to the traditional open methods of procuring kidneys. To maximize the advantages of the laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) method, we applied natural orifice specimen extraction to LESS-DN. A 46-year-old woman with no previous abdominal surgery history volunteered to donate her left kidney to her husband and underwent single-port laparoscopic DN with transvaginal extraction. The procedure was completed without intraoperative complications. The kidney functioned well immediately after transplantation, and the donor and recipient were respectively discharged 2 days and 2 weeks postoperatively. Single-port laparoscopic DN and transvaginal graft extraction is feasible and safe.

<P>Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive impairment. The effect of presenilin 1 (PS1) and PS2 mutation on cognition has been well characterized in a variety of transgenic mice. However, noncognitive behaviors have not been considered in these mice. In the present study, we found that transgenic mice expressing mutant PS2 (N141I) displayed decreased anxiety behavior determined by the elevated plus maze test and the light dark box test. However, these mice showed biphasic ambulatory activity (hyperactivity followed by hypoactivity) in an open field test. Correlated well with the reduced anxiety, expression of GABA<SUB>A</SUB>α<SUB>1</SUB> receptor was higher whereas c-Fos was lower in the cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala of the mice expressing PS2 mutation than those of the wild-type PS2 or nontransgenic control mice. These data indicate that PS2 mutation causes reduction of anxiety, and this effect may be related to the change of the expression of GABA<SUB>A</SUB>α<SUB>1</SUB> receptor and c-Fos. These findings could be useful in the understanding and the treatment of AD patients. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>
Vitamin D3 Induces Autophagy in Human Monocytes/Macrophages via Cathelicidin

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>Autophagy and vitamin D3-mediated innate immunity have been shown to confer protection against infection with intracellular <I>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</I>. Here, we show that these two antimycobacterial defenses are physiologically linked via a regulatory function of human cathelicidin (hCAP-18/LL-37), a member of the cathelicidin family of antimicrobial proteins. We show that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25D3), the active form of vitamin D, induced autophagy in human monocytes via cathelicidin, which activated transcription of the autophagy-related genes <I>Beclin-1</I> and <I>Atg5</I>. 1,25D3 also induced the colocalization of mycobacterial phagosomes with autophagosomes in human macrophages in a cathelicidin-dependent manner. Furthermore, the antimycobacterial activity in human macrophages mediated by physiological levels of 1,25D3 required autophagy and cathelicidin. These results indicate that human cathelicidin, a protein that has direct antimicrobial activity, also serves as a mediator of vitamin D3-induced autophagy.</P>
1.25-Gb/s wireline and wireless data transmission in wavelength reusing WDM passive optical networks

<P>A new architecture for a wavelength-reused wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network, which is simultaneously transmitting both a wireline data and a wireless one, is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The proposed scheme uses a Mach–Zehnder modulator in the central office and a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier in the optical network unit. The subcarrier multiplexing method is utilized to simultaneously generate a wireline data and a wireless one for a downlink transmission. A downlink light is reused to transmit an uplink data using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. A transmitted downlink data is suppressed due to the gain saturation effect of a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier in the optical network unit and it is possible to directly remodulate an uplink 1.25-Gb/s baseband data. A 1.25-Gb/s bidirectional error free transmission is accomplished after 20-km optical transmission. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. <P> A wavelength-division multiplexed colorless radio-on-fiber (RoF) system based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is proposed in this paper. This scheme has a colorless and simple base station (BS), because an RSOA playing the role of amplification and modulation is used at the BS, irrespective of the wavelength. The spurious-free dynamic range, gain, and noise figure of both the downlink and uplink are presented to verify the suitability of the scheme for an RoF system. Error-free transmissions for both uplink and downlink wireless signals of 1.25 Gb/s are demonstrated. From the experimental results using an RF subcarrier of 3 GHz as a wireless signal, it is held that the performance of this scheme will change only slightly when using a millimeter-wave signal ( <TEX>$≫$</TEX> 30 GHz). </P>

<P>A new technique, which can compensate for the lack of channel bandwidth in an optical wireless orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) link based on a light emitting diode (LED), is proposed. It uses an adaptive sampling and an inverse discrete cosine transform in order to convert an OFDM signal into a sparse waveform so that not only is the important data obtained efficiently but the redundancy one is removed. In compressive sensing (CS), a sparse signal that is sampled below the Nyquist/Shannon limit can be reconstructed successively with enough measurement. This means that the CS technique can increase the data rate of visible light communication (VLC) systems based on LEDs. It is observed that the data rate of the proposed CS-based VLC-OFDM link can be made 1.7 times greater than a conventional VLC-OFDM link (from 30.72 Mb/s to 51.2 Mb/s). We see that the error vector magnitude (EVM) of the quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) symbol is 31% (FEC limit: EVM of 32%) at a compression ratio of 40%.</P>

Objective: This study was undertaken to refine the concept of the character Chi(界) in Huangdineijing(黃帝內經), find out the difference between Chi(界) and Zhi(界) and help use them correctly. Methods: This study researched the types and frequency of Chi(界) used in Juzhenfangsongbanyinben(聚珍倣宋版印本) edition of Huangdineijing(黃帝內經) and the mixed usage of Chi(界) and Zhi(界) by comparing some versions of the work. I discerned the meanings of Chi(界) and Zhi(界) by using opinions of annotators and dictionaries etc. Results & Conclusion: The character Chi(界) was used a total of 26 times in Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經). Chi(界) appeared by itself just 5 times, whereas it was used as a compound such as in Chizong(界종), Shunchi(瞬界), Xianchi(癎界) the rest of the time. Even though Chi(界) and Zhi(界) were mixed in their use, it appears that the character Chi(界) had to be used for the symptomatic myoclonus(筋間代性痙攣症狀) of a chronic convulsion(慢驚風), and the character Zhi(界) had to be used for rabies(狂犬病).
