This case report describes a 60-year-old female patient diagnosed with intercostal neuropathy and vertebral compression fractures which occurred following an electric shock injury. The patient received acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine administration between February 10<sup>th</sup>, 2020 and April 25<sup>th</sup>, 2020. The pain level in the thoracic and left intercostal areas was assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale. The Self-report of the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs Pain Scale were used to diagnose neuropathic pain. The Neuropathic-Pain -Scale was used to evaluate the degree of neuropathic symptoms. The Oswestry Disability Index and the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions were used to assess quality of life scales and functional disorder. Following combined Korean medicine treatment, the patient exhibited reduced levels of pain and significant improvement in functional disorder symptoms and quality of life.
Production of γ-amino Butyric Acid by Lactic Acid Bacteria in Skim Milk

동해안 지역 수산발효식품과 수산물로부터 다양한 종류의 유산균들을 분리하여 감마아미노낙산(GABA) 활성을 위해 분석을 하였다. 박층크로마토그래피(TLC)를 이용하여 GABA를 생성하는 4개의 균주를 확보하였으며, 16S rRNA sequencing 분석 결과를 통해 FSFL0004, FSFL0005, FSFL0036 균주는 Lactobacillus (Lb.) brevis, 그리고 FGL0007은 Lactococcus (Lc.) lactis에 가장 유사한 것으로 확인하였다. Lb. brevis FSFL0004와 FSFL0005는 발효된 아귀로부터 분리되었고, Lb. brevis FSFL0036는 갈치 젓갈로부터 분리되었으며, Lc. lactis FGL0007 균주는 참가자미의 내장으로부터 분리되었다. 고속액체크로마토그래피(HPLC)를 사용한 정량분석결과를 보면, FSFL0004, FSFL0005, FSFL0036과 FGL0007에서 각각 10,754.37 μg/ml, 13,082.79 μg/ml, 12,290.19 μg/ml, 45.07 μg/ml의 GABA가 생성되었다. GABA가 풍부한 낙농제품의 발효 종균으로서 상용화 실험을 위해 1% MSG를 포함한 탈지방우유에 4개의 균주를 각각 접종하였다. TLC 결과를 보면 4개의 균주 모두가 GABA 생성을 보였다. HPLC 분석 결과를 보면, 4균주 중 Lc. lactis FGL0007이 가장 높은 GABA 생성(431.42 μg/ml)을 보였다. 본 연구의 내용은 GABA가 함유된 유제품 개발의 기반이 될 수 있을 것으로 생각한다. Lactic acid bacteria were isolated from a variety of fermented seafoods and sea creatures from the East Sea Rim, Korea and were screened for γ-amino butyric acid-producing (GABA) activity. Through a 16S rRNA sequence analysis, the bacteria of interest, which were GABA-positive on the thin-layer chromatography analysis, were recognized as three isolates of Lactobacillus (Lb.) brevis and one isolate of Lactococcus (Lc.) lactis. Lb. brevis FSFL0004 and FSFL0005 were isolated from fermented anglerfish and Lb. brevis FSFL0036 was derived from salted cutlass fish. The Lc. lactis strain FGL0007 was isolated from the gut of a brown sole flounder. According to HPLC analysis, the GABA contents produced by FSFL0004, FSFL0005, FSFL0036 and FGL0007 were equivalent to 10,754.37 μg/ml, 13,082.79 μg/ml, 12,290.19 μg/ml, and 45.07 μg/ml respectively in 1% monosodium glutamate-supplemented methionyltRNA synthetase (MRS) broth. The four strains were inoculated in skim milk with 1% monosodium glutamate to commercialize the strains as starter cultures for GABA-enriched dairy products, and TLC results displayed the production of γ-amino butyric acid by all four strains in the adaptation media. Lc. lactis FGL0007 demonstrated the greatest GABA production (431.42 μg/ml) by HPLC analysis. The GABA production by lactic acid bacteria strains in the skim milk demonstrated in the present study may be helpful for the production of GABA-enriched dairy products.

This case report described a 31-year-old female patient diagnosed with primary hyperhidrosis and had symptoms of excessive sweating on her hands and feet. The patient showed significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life after receiving only acupuncture treatment. From May 4th, 2022 to May 20th, 2022, during 8 outpatient treatments, the patient received acupuncture treatment. The symptoms were assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Hyperhidrosis Quality of Life Index(HidroQOL) was used to assess quality of life scales. Following treatment, the patient's VAS decreased from 7 to 0, and the HidroQOL decreased from 18 to 2. Two weeks after the end of treatment, the effect of treatment was maintained

<P>Pyungwi-san (PWS) is a traditional basic herbal formula. We investigated the effects of PWS on induction of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-<I><I>α</I></I> (TNF-<I><I>α</I></I>)) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B) as well as mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in lipopolysaccharide-(LPS-) induced Raw 264.7 cells and on paw edema in rats. Treatment with PWS (0.5, 0.75, and 1 mg/mL) resulted in inhibited levels of expression of LPS-induced COX-2, iNOS, NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B, and MAPKs as well as production of prostaglandin E<SUB>2</SUB> (PGE<SUB>2</SUB>), nitric oxide (NO), IL-6, and TNF-<I><I>α</I></I> induced by LPS. Our results demonstrate that PWS possesses anti-inflammatory activities via decreasing production of pro-inflammatory mediators through suppression of the signaling pathways of NF-<I><I>κ</I></I>B and MAPKs in LPS-induced macrophage cells. More importantly, results of the carrageenan-(CA-) induced paw edema demonstrate an anti-edema effect of PWS. In addition, it is considered that PWS also inhibits the acute edematous inflammations through suppression of mast cell degranulations and inflammatory mediators, including COX-2, iNOS and TNF-<I><I>α</I></I>. Thus, our findings may provide scientific evidence to explain the anti-inflammatory properties of PWS <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>.</P>
A Patient with Guillain-Barre Syndrome Treated with Combined Korean Medicine Treatments

A patient diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) suffering from numbness in the toes and fingers, paralysis in the face, and back pain received intravenous immunoglobulin on December 28, 2019. Without an improvement in symptoms the patient was admitted to a Korean medicine hospital on January 1, 2020 to receive combined Korean medicine treatment including herbal medicine (Sipjeondaebo-tanggami and Hyangbujasunkipalmul-tang), acupuncture treatment, moxibustion, cupping treatment, and physical therapy. Treatment was administered over 51 days, of which 17 days were during hospitalization. Paralysis of facial muscle, and numbness in fingers and toes were evaluated using the Yanagihara score and numeric rating scale (NRS) score, respectively. Facial paralysis improved (21 to 40 based on Yanagihara score) and paresthesia of the hands and feet disappeared (NRS score 6-7 to NRS score 0). There were no side effects or sequela. This study suggested combined Korean medicine treatment may be effective for the treatment of GBS.

Objective To evaluate the usefulness of transvaginal ultrasound measurements of cervical length before and after elective prophylactic cervical cerclage in predicting preterm delivery before 32 weeks of gestation. Methods Women who underwent an elective cerclage operation at 14 to 19 weeks of gestation and who delivered between January 2004 and December 2009 were enrolled in this study (n=52). Ultrasonography was performed to measure cervical length before and after cerclage. The primary outcome was defined as preterm delivery before 32 weeks of gestation. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to determine the most discriminating cut-off values of ultrasonographic cervical parameters predictive of preterm delivery before 32 weeks of gestation. Results Among the 52 patients studied, ten delivered before 32 weeks of gestation. Among the ultrasonographic cervical parameters compared, only the cervical length after cerclage was significantly different (shorter) in patients who delivered before 32 weeks of gestation (P=0.037) compared to that of those who delivered after 32 weeks of gestation in univariate and multivariate analyses (odds ratio, 0.402; 95% confidence interval, 0.174 to 0.925; P=0.021). The receiver operating characteristic curve showed that a cervical length of 25 mm or less after cerclage was predictive of preterm delivery before 32 weeks of gestation (area under curve, 0.71; 95% confidence interval, 0.56 to 0.87; P=0.029) with a sensitivity of 91.0% and a specificity of 30.0%. Conclusion Patients with a cervical length less than 25 mm after elective cerclage may be at higher risk of preterm delivery before 32 weeks of gestation.

Recently, as interest in environmentally friendly materials has increased, studies on the development of new materials using various biodegradable plastics have been conducted. Poly(lactic acid)(PLA), one of the biodegradable plastics, synthesized from renewable resources has become popular due to their sustainability, biodegradability, and transparency. In this study, PLA composites were prepared by incorporating wood flour(WF), maleic anhydride grafted styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene copolymer(SEBS-g-MAH), and nano clay. SEBS-g-MAH and nano clay were mixed at the same ratio and used as a master batch. The materials used in the study were first compounded with a twin screw extruder and then pelletized using a pelletizer. Thermal properties of PLA composites were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). GA results showed that the thermal stability of PLA/WF composite was reduced compared to PLA only due to the relatively low thermal decomposition temperature of WF. However, the thermal stabilities of the PLA/WF composites were improved in the presence of SEBS-g-MAH/nano clay master batch. This is because the SEBS-g-MAH having thermally stable styrene component binds to the WF surface and forms strong interfacial bondings between WF and PLA matrix. In DSC results of the PLA/WF composites, decreases in glass transition temperatures were observed. It is considered that the addition of WF interferes with the interaction of the PLA polymer chain, which increases the fluidity of the polymer. Besides, the crystallinity of PLA composites decreased with the addition of SEBS-g-MAH/nano clay master batch. This suggests that the presence of SEBS-g-MAH affects the efficiency of nucleation in the crystallization of PLA. SEBS-g-MAH, therefore, effectively improved the thermal properties of PLA/WF composites and it could be used as an promising additive in PLA/WF composites.
