        Epidemiological Studies of Rice Blast Disease Caused by Pyricularia oryzae Cavara I. Measurement of the Amount of Spores Released from a Single Lesion

        자연상태하에서 잎도열병 병반으로부터 포자의 량을 측정하기 위하여 4종의 포자탐집기(금의 원형, 금의 개량형, 길야의 원형, 금$\cdot$길야의 개량형)를 검토한 결과, 원골한 포자형성 및 이탈, 포자채집, 검경에 있어서 한 두가지의 결점이 발견되었다. 따라서 위의 결점을 보완할 수 있는 새로운 포자채집기를 고찰, 성능을 검토하여 상기 4종의 채집기의 결점을 보충할 수 있는 결과를 얻었으므로 금후 자연상태하에서 포자이탈량 조사에 유용할 것으로 생각된다. Four types of spore trap (Kim's original, improved Kim's original, Yoshino's original and mixed type of Kim's and Yoshino's original) were evaluated for their efficacy to "estimate the amount of spores released from leaf blast lesions under the natural conditions. It was found that all four types had one or two defects in allowance for adequate sporulation/release, spore catch or spore counting. Thus, an improved type of spore trap was devised considering that it could cover the defects mentioned above. As a result, newly developed spore trap was quite satisfactory in above mentioned aspects and it could be used for pursuit of spore release phase under the natural conditions.

        Climatic Records of Japan : A Historical Overview

        Proxy data in the historical period in Japan since the 9th century has been first described and their analyzed fluctuation series were shown. Secondly, the climatic records before and after the Meiji restoration in 1868 were mentioned. Thirdly, available date sets of historical climatic records in Japan are listed. Lastly, published records and tables for Japan during the recent years were overviewed. Some discussion on the climatic records and tables is given as concluding remarks.

      • Pressure-Induced Crystallization from Amorphous Calcium Carbonate

        <P>This report describes a newly observed phenomenon: pressure-induced crystallization from amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC). Synthetic ACC samples were pressurized up to 800 MPa at room temperature. Then crystallization of vaterite and calcite was observed from X-ray diffraction patterns. The crystallization pressure depends on the H<SUB>2</SUB>O contents of ACCs. The ACC samples with high-H<SUB>2</SUB>O content (21 wt %), middle-H<SUB>2</SUB>O content (17 wt %), and low-H<SUB>2</SUB>O content (10 wt %) underwent crystallization at pressures higher than 240 MPa, 400 MPa, and 640 MPa, respectively. These results indicate that H<SUB>2</SUB>O in the ACC serves an important role in the crystallization process and that we should treat ACC carefully in preparation for analyses such as infrared spectroscopy to obtain the intrinsic information related to amorphous materials.</P><P>This report describes a new phenomenon: pressure-induced crystallization from amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) at room temperature.         Frictional problems in superconducting magnets are related to the stability and reliability of the magnets, because frictional heating causes quench of the manger and the frictional resistance determines the limit of the shear force at the contacting sufaces. In addition to these problems, magnet structural materials are exposed with neutron and γ-ray in Deutrium- Tritum type fusion reactor, so that it is required to investigate the frictional behavior for irradiated magnet structural materials at cryogenic temperatures. In this study, we investigated the influence of γ-irradiated MoS2 coating film and GFRP AT 4.2 K 77K AND 293 K under fretting conditions.

        A Divided Scheduling Method based on Structural Characteristics in Wireless

        Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are used for metropolitan area network that requires high network throughput for handling many users. TDMA-based access is a common solution for this problem and several scheduling methods have been proposed. However, existing heuristic methods have room for improvement at network throughput although they are low complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel divided scheduling method based on structural characteristics in order to improve network throughput in WMNs. It separately schedules neighbor links of gateways and that of the other links by different scheduling algorithms. Simulation-based evaluations show that our proposal improves up to 14% of network throughput compared with conventional scheduling algorithm script.

        日本淨土敎の統合的理解のために-柳宗悅『南無阿彌陀佛』の知識社會學-

        本稿で取り上げるのは、柳宗悅が?後の大きな仕事として?した、『南無阿彌陀佛』という佛敎關連の著作である。若 き頃、柳は西洋の宗敎思想に傾倒した。しかし?後になって、日本の佛敎思想の硏究に關心を移した。日本が占領を? し、ようやく復興を始めようとする1950年代初頭である。 この時期に柳がのめりこんだのは、?米文化でも民主主義でもなく、また??復興でも科學技術の振興でもなかっ た。ある意味では、それらと?っ向から對立するかに見える、佛敎硏究に柳は?心したのである。その意味で、彼の佛 敎硏究は、?後の多くの知識人を?ました問題と同一であったと言えるかもしれない。すなわちその問題とは、?前ま での?値?が崩?した敗?後の日本社會において、人?の寄って立つ思想を作り出すことにあった。 柳の場合、その思想の基盤は、淨土思想に求められた。?史にうずもれる運命にある、名もなき民衆こそが主役とな る時代、それが?後である。柳の考える理想の民衆とは、どのような人物か。それは、ふとしたことで出會った「南無 阿彌陀佛」という言葉の??を瞬時に理解し、日常の實?に移し替え得る人である。その實?は、どんなに些細な?遣 いや、支援であってもかまわない。そうした些細なことがらの中にこそ、本當に大切なものが宿る。柳はそのことの持 つ意味を?後に生きる民衆に?づかせるために本書を書いたのである。 This paper will focus on one of the Muneyoshi Yanagi`s master works, NAMU-AMIDABUTSU(南無阿?陀?), which was published after the World War II. When Yanagi was young, he devoted himself on Western religious thought. After the war, in the early 1950s, however, he started to change his interest to the study of the Japanese Buddhist thought. It was when Japan escaped from the occupation and began to be revived. What Yanagi was absorbed in at this time was not European-American culture or democratic thought, and was not even economic revitalization or promotion of the technology. He devoted to study of Buddhism, which seems to be opposed to European values. In this sense, his study may have had the same challenges that troubled many post-war intellectuals in Japan. The challenges were to create the thought for post-war people in the Japanese society instead of the before-war values which already collapsed. In the case of Yanagi, the base of thought was brought from Jodo thought (?土思想). The nameless people were always forgotten in the national history; however, such people finally began to play the leading role in after-war era. According to Yanagi, what kind of people shall be the ideal? It shall be the person who is able to understand the essence of the word ``NAMU-AMIDABUTSU`` instantly and move it to daily practice. The casual care and support are enough for the practice. There are really important things in such a trifling behavior. This is what Yanagi wanted to let the Japanese people who lived in the post-war era to understand through publication of that book.

      • Development of a Simple Method to Determine the Mouse Strain from Which Cultured Cell Lines Originated

        Misidentification of cultured cell lines results in the generation of erroneous scientific data. Hence, it is very important to identify and eliminate cell lines with a different origin from that being claimed. Various methods, such as karyotyping and isozyme analysis, can be used to detect inter-species misidentification. However, these methods have proved of little value for identifying intra-species misidentification, and it will only be through the development and application of molecular biological approaches that this will become practical. Recently, the profiling of microsatellite variants has been validated as a means of detecting gene polymorphisms and has proved to be a simple and reliable method for identifying individual cell lines. Currently, the human cell lines provided by cell banks around the world are routinely authenticated by microsatellite polymorphism profiling. Unfortunately, this practice has not been widely adopted for mouse cells lines. Here we show that the profiling of microsatellite variants can be also applied to distinguish the commonly used mouse inbred strains and to determine the strain of origin of cultured cell lines. We found that approximately 4.2% of mouse cell lines have been misidentified; this is a similar rate of misidentification as detected in human cell lines. Although this approach cannot detect intra-strain misidentification, the profiling of microsatellite variants should be routinely carried out for all mouse cell lines to eliminate inter-strain misidentification.
