Most recent studies on motivation have focused on individuals’ inner psychological characteristics or cognitive and affective aspects. Consequently, researchers have tended to focus less on the impacts of sociocultural contexts and the environment on literacy motivation and learning. In today’s education system, there is a lack of research into reading motivation from the sociocultural perspective, despite its necessity and significance. Therefore, this study aimed to emphasize and discuss reading motivation through sociocultural lenses. Thus, this study outlined the transitions and characteristics of motivation theories. It also discussed why it is necessary to research reading motivation through a sociocultural perspective and highlighted which research methods deserve attention. Further, the study explored what these sociocultural motivation theories can mean for reading education and research.

3D8 single chain variable fragment (scFv) is a recombinant monoclonal antibody with nuclease activity that was originally isolated from autoimmune-prone MRL mice. In a previous study, we analyzed the nuclease activity of 3D8 scFv and determined that a HeLa cell line expressing 3D8 scFv conferred resistance to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and pseudorabies virus (PRV). In this study, we demonstrate that 3D8 scFv could be delivered to target tissues and cells where it exerted a therapeutic effect against PRV. PRV was inoculated via intramuscular injection, and 3D8 scFv was injected intraperitoneally. The observed therapeutic effect of 3D8 scFv against PRV was also supported by results from quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, southern hybridization, and immunohistochemical assays. Intraperitoneal injection of 5 and $10{\mu}g$ 3D8 scFv resulted in no detectable toxicity. The survival rate in C57BL/6 mice was 9% after intramuscular injection of 10 $LD_{50}$ PRV. In contrast, the 3D8 scFv-injected C57BL/6 mice showed survival rates of 57% ($5{\mu}g$) and 47% ($10{\mu}g$). The results indicate that 3D8 scFv could be utilized as an effective antiviral agent in several animal models.

Multi-Fingered haptics is imperative for truly immersive virtual reality experience, as many real-world tasks involve finger manipulation. One of the key lacking aspect for this is the absence of technologically and economically viable wearable haptic interfaces that can simultaneously track the finger/hand motions and display multi-degree-of-freedom (DOF) contact forces. In this paper, we propose a novel wearable cutaneous haptic interface (WCHI), which consists of 1) finger tracking modules (FTMs) to estimate complex multi-DOF finger and hand motion; and 2) cutaneous haptic modules (CHMs) to convey three-DOF contact force at the finger-tip. By opportunistically utilizing such different types of sensors as inertial measurement units, force sensitive resistor sensors, and soft sensors, the WCHI can track complex anatomically consistent multi-DOF finger motion while avoiding FTM-CHM electromagnetic interference possibly stemming from their collocation in the small form-factor interface; while also providing the direction and magnitude of three-DOF finger-tip contact force, the feedback of which can significantly enhance the precision of contact force generation against variability among users via their closed-loop control. Human subject study is performed with a virtual peg insertion task to show the importance of both the multi-DOF finger tracking and the three-DOF cutaneous haptic feedback for dexterous manipulation in virtual environment.

In CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) or heat transfer problem using an unstructured grid, it is possible to divide a complex domain into several simple domains. However, the grid points on the interface between two domains are not matched completely so called non-conformal mesh. Thus, mesh handling technique is needed to deal with this problem. Especially, a similar problem occurs in multi-phase or multi-material system. Since fluxes are calculated two neighbor cells sharing a surface in a finite volume method, it is difficult to calculate the proper flux. In order to overcome the problem, we employed the clipping method that calculates the connectivity and geometrical informations between non-conformal cells on the interface. The clipping method is generally used for comptuer graphics and searches the shape information of the overlapped polygons. In this study, we implemented the clipping algorithm that calculates the area and center of overlapped polygons. To validate the clipping method, the 3-dimensional heat conduction with a non-conformal interface was performed and then, it represented the reasonable solutions.

Airy plasmons in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide are presented, where they can go through negative refraction. We show that the counterbending direction of Airy plasmons can be formed when they propagate through the MIM waveguide. By mainly focusing on the (1+1)-dimensional case of Airy plasmons, numerical estimation of Airy plasmons following negative refraction is given by the use of a rigorous coupled wave analysis technique. We believe that novel photonic devices and phenomena based on Airy plasmons interacting with negative index materials can be developed and applied.

Disciplinary literacy, which is a very active area of research in the U.S., is little known in Korea. Given that Korean language educators are only now starting to study disciplinary literacy, comparing and analyzing the different perspectives of leading disciplinary literacy researchers in the field will provide a useful theoretical foundation for future studies of disciplinary literacy in the Korean context. By providing this perspective, this study describes and analyzes (a) how disciplinary literacy grew out of content area literacy, (b) how representative disciplinary literacy researchers define disciplinary literacy and its characteristics, and (c) which teaching points these researchers emphasize. This review of the perspectives, definitions, characteristics and teaching proposed by representative disciplinary literacy scholars reveals where their perspectives are similar to each other and where they differ. All agree that each discipline requires special literacy skills, strategies, and practices and most also emphasize the need for disciplinary experts, teacher educators, and teachers to work together to teach and engage their students in each discipline (content area). From this review, some issues are raised: how discipline should be defined, how the disciplinary literacy approach can be taught in universities in Korea, whether the approach should be applied to the elementary school level, and how content area professionals and literacy professionals should collaborate with each other.

This study was conducted to determine whether trichome density affects the oviposition behavior of adult female Tetranychus urticae Koch on host plant leaves. Experiments were conducted with twenty replications on the leaf discs of each plant (Pear, 'Niitaka'; Apple, 'Fuji'; Strawberry, 'Meahyang'; 3cm diameter) at 25℃, 60-70% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. One female T. urticae was placed on each disc. The number and locations of laid eggs were recorded at 24 h intervals until T. urticae died. The trichomes were distributed along the midrib of abaxial surface of pear leaves but were evenly distributed on that of apple and strawberry leaves. Eggs were mostly laid along the midrib of pear leaf disc, but eggs were laid not only along the midrib but also randomly over the leaf disc of apple and strawberry. Therefore, it appeared that T. urticae preferred to lay eggs on the specific location where trichomes were densely distributed. Further study is needed to quantify how different distribution patterns of T. urticae eggs on different plant leaves affect the efficacy of predatory mites to control T. urticae.
