        A Combination of Baicalin and Berberine Hydrochloride Ameliorates Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colitis by Modulating Colon Gut Microbiota

        Baicalin and berberine hydrochloride are the main chemical compositions of Scutellariae Radix and Coptidis Rhizoma, respectively. S. Radix and C. Rhizoma are two traditional Chinese herbs that are commonly used together in compounded formulations to treat colitis. Therefore, the combination of Baicalin and berberine hydrochloride (BBH) to treat colitis was studied. The results of pharmacological evaluations demonstrated the excellent protective effects of BBH on colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). BBH could improve the morphological condition of colitis in mice and maintain the balance of proinflammation cytokines (IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β, and TNF-α) and anti-inflammation cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). The 16s rDNA sequencing revealed that BBH was able to modulate the composition of intestinal microflora, especially the abundances of Eubacterium_brachy_group, Holdemania, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG_003, Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, and Sellimonas. The results of PICRUSt indicated that the therapeutic effects of BBH were tightly connected with DNA synthesis, replication and repair of gut microbiota. In summary, it was concluded that BBH could protect mice against DSS-induced colitis, and the protective effects were tightly correlated with gut microbiota.

      • Bilingualism and Development of Social Competence of English Language Learners: A Review

        To help define future research direction and enhance educational service for children from Asian and Latino immigrant backgrounds, this review examines research investigating social competence with reference to host and heritage language skills. A targeted search obtained 14 peer-reviewed studies published from 1994 to 2014 focusing on children aged from birth to 12 years. Social competence is mainly measured by four dimensions: externalizing behaviours, internalizing behaviours, social skills and relationships with others. The evidence suggests that English proficiency levels are positively associated with social skills and parent-child relationships are of higher quality when parent-child heritage language difference is minimal. However the findings are mixed regarding how English levels are associated with externalizing, internalizing behaviours and relationships with others and how heritage language levels are associated with social competence. This review makes a set of recommendations for future research including assessment of participants’ language proficiency with language tests and examination of emotional factors in the relationship between English and social competence. The implications of the findings are also discussed for educators.

        Research on the structure design of the LBE reactor coolant pump in the lead base heap

        Since the first nuclear reactor first critical, nuclear systems has gone through four generations of history,and the fourth generation nuclear system will be truly realized in the near future. The notions of SVBRand lead-bismuth eutectic alloy coolant put forward by Russia were well received by the internationalnuclear science community. Lead-bismuth eutectic alloy with the ability of the better neutron economy,the low melting point, the high boiling point, the chemical inertness to water and air and other features,which was considered the most promising coolant for the 4th generation nuclear reactors. This studymainly focuses on the structural design optimization of the 4th-generation reactor coolant pump,including analysis of external characteristics, inner flow, and transient characteristic. It was found that:the reactor coolant pump with a central symmetrical dual-outlet volute structure has better radialdirectionbalance, the pump without guide vane has better hydraulic performance, and the pumpwith guide vanes has worse torsional vibration and pressure pulsation. This study serves as experienceaccumulation and technical support for the development of the 4th generation nuclear energy system.

        A second order analytical solution of focused wave group interacting with a vertical wall

        The interaction of focused wave groups with a vertical wall is investigated based on the second order potential theory. The NewWave theory, which represents the most probable surface elevation under a large crest, is adopted. The analytical solutions of the surface elevation, velocity potential and wave force exerted on the vertical wall are derived, up to the second order. Then, a parametric study is made on the interaction between nonlinear focused wave groups and a vertical wall by considering the effects of angles of incidence, wave steepness, focal positions, water depth, frequency bandwidth and the peak lifting factor. Results show that the wave force on the vertical wall for obliquely-incident wave groups is larger than that for normally-incident waves. The normalized peak crest of wave forces reduces with the increase of wave steepness. With the increase of the distance of focal positions from the vertical wall, the peak crest of surface elevation, although fluctuates, decreases gradually. Both the normalized peak crest and adjacent crest and trough of wave forces become larger for shallower water depth. For focused wave groups reflected by a vertical wall, the frequency bandwidth has little effects on the peak crest of wave elevation or forces, but the adjacent crest and trough become smaller for larger frequency bandwidth. There is no significant change of the peak crest and adjacent trough of surface elevation and wave forces for variation of the peak lifting factor. However, the adjacent crest increases with the increase of the peak lifting factor.

        MODELING AND CONTROL OF ENGINE STARTING FOR A FULL HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE BASED ON SYSTEM DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS

        This paper focuses on the dynamic modeling and control of engine starting for a Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FHEV) consisting of an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) and Dual Clutch Transmissions (DCTs). The dynamic characteristics of the engine, the ISG motor and the main clutch are analyzed respectively. The dynamic models of the main components of the powertrain system are also established taking the system dynamic characteristics into consideration. The FHEV dynamic model of engine starting during electric driving mode has been investigated in detail. The coordinated control strategy of engine starting has been proposed based on the powertrain system dynamic characteristics. The simulation for the engine starting control during electric driving mode has been performed based on the Matlab/Simulink platform. The simulation results show that the proposed control strategy satisfies the requirements of response and smoothness during engine starting process. Furthermore, a bench test has been carried out to analyze the system characteristics during engine starting process. The test data is highly agreeable to the simulation data and the effectiveness of engine starting control strategy is validated by the comparison between simulation results and the test data.

        Controlled synthesis and characterization of BiVO4 dendrites via a hydrothermal method

        BiVO4 dendrites have been controllably synthesized by a hydrothermal method without any surfactants or templates. Thestructure and morphology of the obtained BiVO4 dendrites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electronmicroscope, transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The effect of the pHvalues, precursors, solution concentrations, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the morphology and structure of theBiVO4 dendrites was systematically studied for the first time. It is found that the morphologies of the obtained BiVO4crystallites can vary from cubic-like to dendritic shape. The BiVO4 dendrites can be successfully fabricated by thehydrothermal method at 150 oC and pH 7 when Bi2(CO3)3 and NH4VO3 were used as precursors The resultant dendriticstructure has four trunks which have ordered branches on the opposite sides of the trunks. A rational mechanism for theoriental growth of the BiVO4 dendrites is discussed. The preparation of BiVO4 dendrites with well-dened shapes may open newopportunities for wide applications of future nanodevices.

        Alternatively Polarized Macrophages Regulate the Growth and Differentiation of Ependymal Stem Cells through the SIRT2 Pathway

        Ependymal stem cells (EpSCs) are dormant stem cells in the adult spinal cord that proliferate rapidly and migrate to the site of injury after spinal cord injury (SCI). Although they can differentiate into neurons under appropriate conditions in vitro, EpSCs mainly differentiate into astrocytes in vivo. Our previous study confirmed that alternatively polarized macrophages (M2) facilitate the differentiation of EpSCs towards neurons, but the detailed mechanism remains elusive. In the present study, we found that M2 conditioned medium could upregulate the expression of Sirtuin 2 (SIRT2) in EpSCs in vitro through the BDNF/TrkB-MEK/ERK signaling pathway. As an important deacetylase, SIRT2 deacetylated stable Ac-α- tubulin (Acetyl alpha Tubulin) in microtubules and thus promoted EpSC differentiation into neurons. The present study provides a theoretical basis and a new way to improve neural recovery, such as regulating the growth and differentiation of EpSCs by increasing the proportion of M2 cells in the local microenvironment or upregulating the expression of SIRT2 in EpSCs.

        A study of hydroelastic behavior of hinged VLFS

        This paper introduces a new method to study the hydroelastic behavior of hinged Very Large Floating Structures (VLFSs). A hinged twomodule structure is used to confirm the present approach. For each module, the hydroelasticity theory proposed by Lu et al. (2016) is adopted to consider the coupled effects of wave dynamics and structural deformation. The continuous condition at the connection position between two adjacent modules is also satisfied. Then the hydroelastic motion equation can be established and numerically solved to obtain the vertical displacement, force and bending moment of the hinged structure. The results calculated by the present new method are compared with those obtained using three-dimensional hydroelasticity theory (Fu et al., 2007), which shows rather good agreement.

        In this paper, we report the controlled synthesis of SrCO3 crystals by a simple hydrothermal method without any surfactants and templates. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of pH value, temperature, and reaction time on the formation of SrCO3 crystals was investigated. This novel route is proved to be simple and environment-friendly, which can be extended to the shape-controlled synthesis of other metal oxide nanocrystals.

      • Identification and management the financial risks of accumulator

        This paper focuses on using building block approach to identify and management financial risks of acumulator which is a kind of high-riskand complex financial derivative. When the underlying asset pricek rise, the investors could earn a lot from accumulator contracts, on the contrary, there are huge potential risks if the price falls. At present, the accumulator causes enormous losses to lots of investors, eve resulting in bankruptcy. These investors were not fully aware of the potential risks. This paper uses financial building blocks approach to decompose the accumulator into a number of well-known financial derivatives, helping investors to analyze the potential investment risks of accumulator contracts in different economic situations. Then base on the essential characteristics of accumulator, this paper proposes and testifies the proposal of hedging, making investors be fully aware of the risks of accumulator and managing the financial risks.
