A Study on the Forecasting of Employment Demand in Kenya Logistics Industry

This study focused on the alternative to estimate the demand of employment in Kenya logistics. First of all, it investigated the importance and necessity of search about the present circumstance of the country’s industry. Next, it reviewed respectively the concept and limitation of several previous models for employment, including Bureau of Labor Statistics, USA; ROA, Netherlands; IER (Institute for Employment Research), UK; and IAB, Germany. In regard to the demand forecasting of employers in logistics, it could anticipate more realistically the future demand by the time-lag approach. According to the findings, if value of output record 733,080 KSH million in 2015 and 970,640 in 2020, compared to 655,222 in 2013, demand on wage employment in logistics industry would be reached up to 95,860 in 2015 and 104,329 in 2020, compared to about 89,600 in 2012. To conclude, this study showed the more rational numbers about the demand forecasting of employment than the previous researches and displayed the systematic approach to estimate industry manpower in logistics.

The presence of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is omniscient, led by full force emergence of technologies that make biological, physical, and digital worlds borderless. All industries which jump on the bandwagon, can observe convergence and merging of bushiness happening within, between and across industries. As the shipping and port logistics industry is said to be in eye of this storm, the purpose of this study is to investigate the shipping and port logistics industry’s awareness regarding 4th IR, as well to identify necessary countermeasures in responding to progression of this trend. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology was then used to compare the importance of four phases of countermeasures, reviewed by experts in the field. Results showed that countermeasures should be first orchestrated to the ‘Merging and Integration of Inter-industry', then followed by ‘Preemptive Introduction of Advanced Technology', ‘Expansion of Intra-industry Businesses’, and eventually 'Automation, Unmanned Technology'. Last but not least, four phases of countermeasures which should be introduced and executed one phase after another, are outlined for the shipping and port logistics industry to boost its competitiveness in addressing this progressive trend.

The objective of this study is to empirically investigate the effect of gender discrimination to female workers in Korean shipping firms on the their organization commitment and organizational citizenship behavior. In carrying out the objective of this study, two hypotheses about the structural relationship among gender discrimination, organization commitment and organizational citizenship behaviors in the Korean shipping firms are established after reviewing the related studies. Survey questionnaires are distributed and analyzed to test the reliability and validity of the response. Also, a structural equation model is established and the model is analyzed by AMOS. In conclusion, there are a negative effect of gender discrimination on female workers’ organizational commitment and a positive effect of their commitment on OCB. Through this paper, the comprehensive understanding of the structural relationship among gender discrimination, organization commitment and organizational citizenship behavior would be promoted.
