Successful Enrichment of Rarely Found Candidatus Anammoxoglobus propionicus from Leachate Sludge

( Shu Chuan Hsu ),( Yen Chun Lai ),( Ping Heng Hsieh ),( Pun Jen Cheng ),( Suen Shin Wong ),( Chun Hsiung Hung ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2014 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.24 No.7

Bacteria that mediate the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium (anammox) have been detected in natural ecosystems, as well as various wastewater treatment systems. In this study, sludge from a particular landfill leachate anaerobic treatment system was selected as the incubation seed for anammox microorganism enrichment owing to its possible anammox activity. Transmission electron microscopy observation, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis analysis, and cloning/sequencing techniques were applied to identify the diversity of anammox microorganisms throughout the incubation. During the early stage of operation, the diversity of anammox microorganisms was similar to the original complex microbes in the seed sludge. However, as incubation time increased, the anammox microorganism diversity within the system that was originally dominated by Candidatus (Ca.) Brocadia sp. was replaced by Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus. The domination of Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus produced a stable removal of ammonia (70 mg-N/l) and nitrite (90 mg-N/l), and the total nitrogen removal efficiency was maintained at nearly 95%. The fluorescence in situ hybridization results showed that Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus was successfully enriched from 1.8 ± 0.6% initially to 65 ± 5% after 481 days of operation. Therefore, the present results demonstrated the feasibility of enriching Ca. Anammoxoglobus propionicus from leachate sludge, even though the original cell count was extremely low. Application of this seldom found anammox organism could offer an alternative to current ammonia-nitrogen treatment.

CdS/CdSe co-sensitized brookite H:TiO2 nanostructures: Charge carrier dynamics and photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation

        Chang, Yung-Shan,Choi, Mingi,Baek, Minki,Hsieh, Ping-Yen,Yong, Kijung,Hsu, Yung-Jung Elsevier 2018 Applied Catalysis B Vol.225 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we have synthesized CdS/CdSe co-sensitized brookite TiO2 nanostructures with hydrogen doping (H:TiO2/CdS/CdSe) in a facile solution reaction and studied their PEC performances. Compared to undoped brookite TiO2, the H:TiO2/CdS/CdSe composites exhibit much enhanced photocurrent generation, which originates from the improved charge transfer kinetics endowed by hydrogen doping and sensitization. Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) and electrochemical impendence spectroscopy (EIS) are employed to explore the charge transfer dynamics between sensitizers and TiO2 and charge carrier kinetics at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface. According to the analytical results, sensitizations of TiO2 are found to enhance the charge separation efficiency. Besides, the hydrogen doping into TiO2 generates oxygen vacancy states, providing additional charge transfer pathway and prohibiting charge recombination, beneficial for enhancing the PEC performances as well. Based on the charge dynamics data, we further develop charge transfer models for TiO2/CdS/CdSe and H:TiO2/CdS/CdSe. The findings from this work can help understanding the charge transfer dynamics in brookite TiO2-based composite systems as well as designing versatile photoelectrodes for solar energy conversion.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> CdS/CdSe co-sensitized brookite H:TiO2 exhibit much enhanced photoactivity. </LI> <LI> Superiority of H:TiO2/CdS/CdSe results from the improved charge transfer. </LI> <LI> Practical use for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production was demonstrated. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Effects of Exercise on Sleep Quality in Pregnant Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

        Shu-Ya Yang,Shou-Jen Lan,Yea-Yin Yen,Yen-Ping Hsieh,Pei-Tseng Kung,Shao-Huan Lan 한국간호과학회 2020 Asian Nursing Research Vol.14 No.1

Purpose: Sleep quality was considered a priority concern facing pregnant women. Conventional wisdom argues that good sleep quality benefits pregnant women and their fetuses. The aim of this study is to assess the effects of a specific exercise program on the sleep quality in pregnant women. Methods: Searches were executed in seven databases since their inceptions until February 28, 2019, for randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of an exercise program on the sleep quality and insomnia in pregnant women. A random-effects model was applied for meta-analysis, and odds ratio, mean differences (MDs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are shown as parts of outcomes. Results: Seven studies were included for meta-analysis. Compared with their not-exercising counterparts, analyses showed that regularly exercising women had significantly enhanced sleep quality, with an odds ratio of 6.21 (95% CI, 2.02–19.11;p = .001; I2 = 80.2%), with a standardized MD of −0.93 (95% CI, −1.19 to −0.67; p < .001; I2 = 30.0%). However, exercising women showed no significant insomnia improvement, with an standardized MD of −2.85 (95% CI, −7.67 to 1.98; p = .250; I2 = 97.0%), relative to their not-exercising counterparts. Conclusion: This research indicated that exercise has a positive impact on the sleep quality of pregnant women. Despite the aforementioned positive impact on sleep quality, the present study did not find evidence to support that exercise may also improve insomnia for pregnant women.
