Improving Logistics Management Using Foldable/Collapsible Containers: A Case Study

Yapa Mahinda BANDARA,Vikram GARANIYA,Christopher CHIN,Zhi Hui LEONG 한국해운물류학회 2015 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.31 No.1

Foldable containers have the potential to enhance the cost efficiency of the logistics industry and improve the problem of space allocation at seaports. Using primary and secondary data sources the pros and cons of using foldable containers as compared to standard containers are identified, and it is shown that a port can gain cost efficiencies by using foldable containers. A simulation for the Port of Melbourne (Australia) demonstrates that using foldable containers would reduce the projected total number of containers handled by the port in 2035 from 7.057 million to 5.817 million, with an 80% decrease in the number of empty containers. Foldable containers can therefore have a significant impact on the reformation of the transport and logistics systems.

        Determinants of Port Infrastructure Pricing

Yapa Mahinda BANDARA,Hong-Oanh NGUYE,Shu-Ling CHEN 한국해운물류학회 2013 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.29 No.2

Despite many theories on port pricing have been discussed in literature, empirical research on this topic remains very limited. This paper seeks to empirically analyse port infrastructure charges using the simultaneous equation regression method and data of 159 seaports. The analysis result indicates that seaport infrastructure pricing is primarily cost-based but other factors are also relevant. These include demand, the governance model, legal structure and geographical region. Given the exploratory nature of its research, the paper also discusses the limitations and implications for port authorities, policy makers and future research.

Factors Affecting the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Reverse Logistics Process

Gangani Sureka,Yapa Mahinda Bandara,Deepthi Wickramarachchi 인하대학교 정석물류통상연구원 2018 JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL LOGISTICS AND TRADE Vol.16 No.2

The purpose of this research is to identify the current reverse logistics practices adopted by soft drink companies and the prominent factors which can decide the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire process of the reverse logistics channel. The paper employs Pareto analysis and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method on data collected from logistics professionals involved in the software industry in Sri Lanka using two questionnaires. As the prominent factors, transportation, accidents, packaging, a method of storage, the cleaning process and sorting process was identified and the first four prominent factors have a higher influence on both measures of efficiency and effectiveness. They can also identify the external factors which can emerge inefficiencies due to outsourced dealers. Lack of previous literature on the subject matter and the difficulty to access the filed data were the main limitations of this study. The identified factors will help to identify the correct root causes for the inefficiencies of the current reverse logistics practices and concentrating on these factors will give an opportunity for the soft drink industry players to successfully implement a sustainable green supply chain which reduces waste at each stage of its forwards and reverse logistics process. Transportation, Accidents, Packaging, and Storage have been previously identified as considerations in reverse logistics processes and the current study showed that they have a higher impact on both efficiency and effectiveness on reverse logistics and these factors should be given specific consideration while in the operations.

Non-Price Competition in the Port Sector: A Case Study of Ports in Turkey

Soner ESMER,Hong-Oanh NGUYEN,Yapa Mahinda BANDARA,Kazım YENİ 한국해운물류학회 2016 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.32 No.1

Although the port sector has been facing increasing competition, there is limited research on how ports compete using non-price competition strategies. There are a few studies on non-price competition in the port sector. However they mainly focus on the marketing aspect. This paper seeks to fill this gap in the literature, especially from a combined marketing-economic perspective. Especially the paper’s main objective is to identify the determinants of non-price competition in the port sector and evaluate their effect on various aspects of non-price competition. We start with a general conceptual framework to explain how competition in the sector can be affected by various factors and then propose an analytical framework on non-price competition. The analytical model is then used to support the design of a survey questionnaire. Next, hypothesis tests are conducted using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) and data collected from a survey of Turkish ports. Based on the analysis results, the implications for port management and future research are also discussed.

      • POLLUTION MANAGEMENT AT A SEAPORT TERRITORY IN EAST COAST OF PENINSULAR MALAYSIA:ISSUES AND PANACEAS

Jagan JEEVAN,Rhonalyn Perez AGUPO,Yapa Mahinda BANDARA,Dai Duong NGUYEN,Gyei Kark PARK 국제이네비해양경제학회 2018 International Journal of e-Navigation and Maritime Vol.10 No.1

Transport sector activities are the major sources of pollutants to the atmosphere and natural environment. Seaports contribute significantly to the cause of pollution in the water and water front areas they are located. Like other industrial nations and regions, maritime sector in Malaysia continues to grow and expand to facilitate global and regional trade and as a maritime-related activities result have proliferated in sea and shore. This has exposed seaports to a growing pressure and posed challenges to operate in an environmentally friendly manner. This paper aims to classify environmental issues caused by shipping and seaport activities and propose strategies to reduce environmental issues in seaports at east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Using quantitative research design, data was collected through a survey questionnaire from personnel at east coast Malaysian seaports. The result of this paper indicates that garbage dumping, air pollution, maintenance waste, dust, noise pollution, bilge water, dredging operations and oil spill are the most important issues contributed by seaports activities. This paper suggested several strategies that can be implemented to mitigate environmental issues at east coast of Malaysia including Kuantan, Kemaman and Kerteh seaports.
