        Elevated Serum Galectin-1 and Galectin-3 Levels in Children With Specific Learning Disorder: A Case Control Study

        Objective Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder in which underlying pathogenesis and etiological factors are not fully understood. Neuroinflammatory response (measured with serum levels of galectin-1 and galectin-3), which is associated with learning and memory, may play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of SLD. Aim of the present study is to examine whether serum galectin-1 and galectin-3 levels are related to SLD.Methods The current study consisted of 42 treatment-naive children with SLD and 42 control subjects. All of the subjects were assessed using semi-structured psychiatric examination to diagnose SLD and exclude attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Serum galectin-1 and galectin-3 levels were measured via venous blood samples.Results The SLD and control group did not differ significantly in terms of age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). The SLD group had significantly higher serum levels of galectin-1 (8.78±2.97 vs. 7.40±2.03, p=0.019) and galectin-3 (1.86±0.93 vs. 1.32±0.69, p=0.003) than the control group when controlled for age, sex, and BMI.Conclusion Higher serum levels of galectin-1 and galectin-3 in children with SLD may indicate the role of neuroinflammatory response in the pathogenesis of SLD. Other mechanisms involving galectin-1 and galectin-3 related to learning may play a part in the etiology of SLD.

      • Investigation of the performance behavior of a forward osmosis membrane system using various feed spacer materials fabricated by 3D printing technique

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Recently, feed spacer research for improving the performance of a membrane module has adopted three-dimensional (3D) printing technology. This study aims to improve the performance of membrane feed spacers by using various materials and incorporating 3D printing. The samples were fabricated after modeling with 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to investigate the mechanical strength, water flux, reverse solute flux, and fouling performances. This research was performed using acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polypropylene (PP), and natural polylactic acid (PLA) as printing material, and the spacer model was produced using a diamond-shaped feed spacer, with a commercially available product as a reference. The 3D printed samples were initially compared in terms of size and precision with the 3D CAD model, and deviations were observed between the products and the CAD model. Then, the spacers were tested in terms of mechanical strength, water flux, reverse solute flux, and fouling (alginate-based waste water was used as a model foulant). Although there was not much difference among the samples regarding the water flux, better performances than the commercial product were obtained for reverse solute flux and fouling resistance. When comparing the prominent performance of natural PLA with the commercial product, PLA was found to have approximately 10% less fouling (based on foulant volume per unit area and root mean square roughness values), although it showed similar water flux. Thus, another approach has been introduced for using bio-degradable materials for membrane spacers.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> By utilizing various materials, 3D printed membrane feed spacers were successfully fabricated. </LI> <LI> Better performances than commercial products were obtained (for mechanical strength, water flux, reverse solute flux, and fouling). </LI> <LI> The effects of spacers' surface roughness on water flux and fouling were investigated. </LI> <LI> Biopolymer polylactic acid was used as a spacer material; it exhibited a very high performance. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Finiteness properties of extension functors of cofinite modules

        Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring, I an ideal of R and T be a non-zero I-cofinite R-module with dim(T) ≤ 1. In this paper, for any finitely generated R-module N with support in V (I), we show that the R-modules Ext i R(T,N) are finitely generated for all integers i ≥ 0. This immediately implies that if I has dimension one (i.e., dimR/I = 1), then Exti R(Hj I (M),N) is finitely generated for all integers i, j≥ 0, and all finitely generated R-modules M and N, with Supp(N) ⊆ V (I).

        The Interplay Between Supervisor Safety Support and Occupational Health and Safety Vulnerability on Work Injury

        Background: Workers exposed to hazards without adequate protections are at greater risk of injury and illness. Supervisor activities have also been associated with injury risk. We examined the interplay between supervisor safety support and occupational health and safety (OHS) vulnerability on workplace injury and illness. Methods: A survey was administered to 2,390 workers employed for more than 15 hrs/week in workplaces with at least five employees who had a direct supervisor. We examined the combined effects of hazard exposure with inadequate protection (OHS vulnerability) and supervisor support on workplace injury and illness, using additive interactions in log-binomial regression models. Results: OHS vulnerability and lack of supervisor support independently increased the likelihood of physical injuries at work. Crude and adjusted models showed that the risk of physical injury was at least 3.5 times higher among those experiencing both OHS vulnerability and a lack of supervisor support than individuals without OHS vulnerability and with a supportive direct supervisor. Workers who experienced vulnerability were at less risk if they had a supervisor who was supportive. Conclusion: In workplaces where workers experience one or more types of OHS vulnerability, having a supportive supervisor may play an important role in reducing the risk of injury and protecting workers.

        Ideal cell-decompositions for a hyperbolic surface and Euler characteristic

        In this article, we constructively prove that on a surface S with genus g ≥ 2, there exit maximal geodesic laminations with 7g - 7,..., 9g - 9 leaves. Thus, S can have ideal cell-decompositions (i.e., S can be (ideally) triangulated by maximal geodesic laminations) with 7g - 7,..., 9g - 9 (ideal) 1-cells. Once there is a triangulation for a compact surface, the Euler characteristic for the surface can be calculated as the alternating sum F - E+V, where F,E, and V denote the number of faces, edges, and vertices, respectively. We also prove that the same formula holds for the ideal celldecompositions.       • Reliability and Validity of Turkish Version of the Caregiver Quality of Life Index Cancer Scale

        Background: Measuring effects of cancer on family caregivers is important to develop methods which can improve their quality of life (QOL). Nevertheless, up to now, only a few tools have been developed to be used in this group. Among those, the Caregiver Quality of Life Index-Cancer Scale (CQOLC) has met minimum psychometric criteria in different populations in spite of conflicting results. The present study was conducted to evaluate reliability and validity of CQOLC among Turkish cancer family caregivers. Materials and Methods: The CQOLC was administered to 120 caregivers, along with Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Medical Outcomes Study MOS 36- Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). Internal consistency and test-retest stability were used to investigate reliability. Construct validity was examined by using known group method, convergent, and divergent validity. For the known group method, we hypothesized that CQOLC scores would differ between depressed and non-depressed subjects. We investigated convergent validity by correlating scores for CQOLC with scores for other similar measures including SF-36 and STAI. The MSPSS was completed at the same time as CQOLC to provide divergent validity. Results: The values for internal consistency and test-retest correlation were 0.88 and 0.96, respectively. The CQOLC discriminated those who were depressed from those who were not. Convergent validity supported strong correlations between CQOLC scores and two main component scores (PCS, MCS) in SF-36 although there was a weak correlation between CQOLC and STAI scores. Regarding divergent validity, the correlation between CQOLC and MSPSS was in the low range, as expected. Conclusions: The Turkish CQOLC is a reliable and valid tool and it can be utilized to determine QOL of family caregivers.

        Chaotic dynamics of the vertical model in vehicles and chaos control of active suspension system via the fuzzy fast terminal sliding mode control

        In this paper, the control of chaotic vibrations in vehicle suspension system is studied via a fuzzy fast terminal sliding mode method. Therefore, the nonlinear equations of motion in the vehicle half model are derived initially through the Newton-Euler laws and then these equations are solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. For analysis of chaos, some techniques including bifurcation diagrams, frequency response, power spectrum, phase plane trajectories, and Poincaré section are used to identify the chaotic behaviors. The chaotic zones are depicted with critical values on the uncontrolled model under the road surface force. In order to eliminate chaotic behavior, the control signals in the active suspension system are generated using the novel fuzzy fast terminal sliding mode control algorithm. The simulation results of the feedback system show that the suspension system can be stabilized the vibrations by efficient fuzzy fast terminal SMC while eliminating irregular chaotic behaviors.
