A mathematical model has been presented for solidification analysis of ESR ingots. A general finite differential equation was formulated for computer simulation by the use of this model. The effects of ingot size, temperature at slag-metal interface, melting rate, and effective thermal conductivity in liquid on solidification profiles were investigated. The model proposed in the present work was successfully applied in treating solidification analysis of ESR ingots.

The NCT Program, in which the present JT-60U is being modified into a superconducting coil machine, is discussed under nationwide collaboration in Japan. Its mission is to establish high-beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. NCT is designed to have potential to investigate such research.

Alignment failure sometimes occurs during the rubbing process because the rubbing cloth comes in direct contacts with the surface of the alignment film. A number of researches observed and evaluated the surface of the alignment film after the rubbing process had been reported. The real-time rubbing process has not been observed directly yet, though. In this study, the movement of the piles of the rubbing cloth during the rubbing process was observed with a high-speed camera. Furthermore,the relationship between the rubbing scratch on the alignment films and the movement of the pile was investigated. It was found that the movement of the pile affected the rubbing scratches.
Review and Prospect of Ferroelectricity and Magnetism in YMn2O5

YMn2O5 undergoes ferroelectric successive phase transitions at 39 K and 19 K, in which a dielectric constant shows anomalies. Spontaneous polarization was also observed. Just above these ferroelectric phase transition temperatures, at 45 K, antiferromagnetic order occurs. Neutron elastic measurements and magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that the ferroelectric phase transition at 39 K and 19 K occurs simultaneously with the change of magnetic ordering pattern. Review of experimental results and conjecture for the origin of spontaneous polarization are given.??

A microscopic magnetic phase diagram as functions of temperature and magnetic .eld was mapped for multiferroic compounds of RMn2O5 (R = Er, Ho) by using neutron diraction mea- surements under high magnetic .eld. The unambiguous relation between the ferroelectric phase transition and the magnetic phase transition from a two-dimensional incommensurate to a com- mensurate phase, where both the transitions are concomitantly induced by the magnetic .eld, indicates that the electric polarization is magnetically induced and the commensurate spin state is important for stabilizing the ferroelectricity in the multiferroic RMn2O5 system. The origin of the .eld-induced magnetic phase transition is discussed based on the magnetic structure. j_si

<P>We report on the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity of the heavy fermion compounds CeNiGe<SUB>2−<I>x</I></SUB>Si<SUB><I>x</I></SUB> (<img ALIGN='MIDDLE' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0953-8984/16/46/018/cm185233ieqn1.gif' ALT='0\leq x \leq 1 '/>). Compounds with <I>x</I><1 show antiferromagnetic order, which with increasing <I>x</I> shifts toward lower temperature owing to increased exchange coupling between the localized 4f magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Eventually, the magnetic order almost becomes absent, for <I>x</I> = 1. An anomaly observed in the specific heat is well interpreted by the Kondo model for a degenerate impurity spin <I>J</I> = 1/2 in the Coqblin–Schrieffer limit. A coherence peak indicative of the formation of a Kondo lattice is found in the electrical resistivity, whose features are consistent with the results for the specific heat. Interestingly, there is a significant deviation from Fermi-liquid behaviour at the critical concentration <I>x</I> = 1. This deviation is attributed to a quantum phase transition in a model with two-dimensional antiferromagnetic fluctuations.</P>
Lattice Modulation in YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5 Studied by Using Synchrotron Radiation X-rays

RMn2O5 (R = Y and rare earth) shows successive magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions at about 45 K, 40 K, 39 K, 20 K and 10 K and is called a multiferroic compound. We have investigated the lattice modulation vectors (qL) of YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5 by using single crystal Synchrotron Radiation X-ray diraction and compared them with the magnetic propagation vectors (qM) studied by neutron diraction. The relation of the propagation vectors between magnetic materials and dielectrics is found to be qL = 2qM. A preliminary structure analysis of the atomic displacement pattern in the commensurate ferroelectric phase of TbMn2O5 is discussed.fb
